Ok, new selection of skymaps, lots more to choose from. I have to say a massive thank you to kyle91, who generously offered to host these for me. cheers mate!

There are no restrictions on using these textures, you can use these for commercial work, and you don't have to name me if you don't want to. the only restriction is that you can't sell them. that's all.

Usage:

(Edit) I've created a quick video tutorial on how to use them, you can view it here:

http://www.vimeo.com/1526074

Using them is pretty easy. load one of them into the 'world' section of the texturebuttons, Then in the worldbuttons, active these settings:

For Angular Maps (The top ones)

'Real' 'Hori' and 'angmap'

For Spheremaps (The other ones)

'Real' 'Hori' and 'sphere'

Hmmm.....guess you will have to find out for yourself, Im not in the business of spoon feeding answers, especially to people that use exasperated smiley's when Im busting my ass to provide this stuff for the community.

That m@dcow... is rather a silly attitude. This is usually a community where people help each other. And mostly by sharing their knowledge.

I mean I like your skymaps, but since you're giving them away for free... there really is no reason to withold your knowledge.

It's a bit like the old example of whether to give people a fish or a fishing rod.... thanks for the fish.

then again... who am I ;)

Ok, I'm trying my best to stifle a laugh here :P Would you like to hear some reasons why an explanation from me isn't needed?

1. A simple google search will teach you how to make skybox's in terragen, this isn't exactly a topic that is undocumented, is it?

2. You talk about giving people a fishing rod -- Now why would I need to do that when a simple glance down the news and chat forum will lead you to this post right here:

http://www.elysiun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24893

OMG! You wrote that! Seems you've already explained how to do it, and by doing so, you have already given out the fishing rod. Please tell me why I should waste my time explaining it again.

Im sorry if I seemed rude last post, I was having a tough day -- But make no mistake, Im not obligated to explain anything to anyone, so if I choose not to then people will just have to live with it won't they? :P

19-May-04, 05:42
LOL of course m@dcow... and ROFL... yeah terragen... I thought so.

You don't have to do anything, you don't have to justify yourself, you didn't have to reply to my post or his.

But that does not mean I can't be critical. ;)

That's enough diversion from the topic ;) back to your skymaps, which are quite brilliant.

well, the ones that I did on page one are actually created in Vue d'esprit, but the only real reason that I use that instead of terragen is render times. I have a P3 450, so rendering out high res textures takes some time to do, especially with terragen.

Besides, Terragen is free, Vue isn't....So the better option for this community would be terragen.

Nice little anim there dude....as for the explanation of how to create these for yourself, are you looking to create angularmaps or just regular skymaps that are designed to cover a half sphere?

Well, I'm thinking that I like the angmaps best. For some reason, I can't get skymaps to display like I want them to. There is always a gap between the ground plane and the sky, unless I am working with some sort of hilly terrain mesh. I think this is a problem with clipping but I'm not sure exactly. It's a slippery sort of problem. I think I will experiment with fog or something to blend with the sky (but that doesn't seem like it will work).

The only thing left to do is make an actual dome mesh and map the skymaps to it...

thanks madcow :D

how do I use the round images as HDRI?

Download the free version of hdr shop (version 1) from here:

http://www.ict.usc.edu/graphics/HDRShop/

open up one of the angular maps, then save it as a hdri file, it's at the top of the list when you do a "save as"

Then load the hdr file into the worldbuttons as you would a normal texture. Don't worry about the fact that you can't see a preview, it doesn't mean that it isn't working.

Next thing is to make sure you are rendering with yafray and have Global illumination selected, it doesn't work with the internal renderer.

TheANIMAL:

Ya, I noticed that one too.....and I wasn't about to spend another 5 or so hours rendering it out

As seen here - no matter what i do, the skymap has a gap to the ground.

has anyone ever actually created a format for images which IS a sphere.

i have been thinking about non square/planar image formats and how it could be done, AFAIK it wouldn't be hard to make.

it would only be hard to get people to pick up the format.

a circle image for example, just say where the starting point is for the image and say how the pixels are to be shown after that.

spiral (formular to place the pixels/ work out distance apart)
circles (distance apart of rings)
lines (horizontal, different lengths each)
spheres circles, or sprial from one end to the other....

other than that info, the pixels mearly need to be recorded in order, with possibility a few bits at the end of each line, or the end of each ring.

i think photoshop was adding support for non square/grid pixel distribution

i guess this is just the next step

has anyone ever actually created a format for images which IS a sphere.

Been smoking the green stuff again, eh? :o

Xla:

well, it transpires that I really am too lazy, so simply add the texture to a sphere that has been chopped in half (you know the drill) and in the texture set the min Y button to -0.333, this should get it near enough to the right proportions.

Obviously then you set your material to shadeless.

not a great explanation, but it is early morning.

You can use HDRShop http://www.debevec.org/HDRShop/, which also handles hdr images you need to make a vertical cross image first, then convert it.

A simpler alternative is to use a program called respam. I found an old and very brief explanation on how to create your own:

First things first....you need to create a panoramic image, now there are many different techniques you can use to go about this but I will focus on showing you how to create a CGI angularmap using only free tools (that's right, we are all cheapskates)

Step1. Get hold of a copy of Terragen (sorry Linux users )

http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

Essentially, what we are aiming to create here is a skybox, which means six renders of your terragen scene taken from the front, back, top, bottom, right and left...this will create a seamless skybox which we will later convert to a panoramic image.

Important settings are:

1. camera zoom settings must be set at 1 (creating the required 90 degree field of view)

2. exposure / light settings are best set at 1 (for vibrant images)

3. the rendered image must be square. The maximum square resolution you can get with the free version of terragen is 960x960, so I'd suggest using this resolution.

that's it. render out each of the six views or use a script to do it for you. one can be found here:

http://www.thomascreek.com/tg/tgpano.htm

Once you have the six views rendered out, you can close terragen down.

*****convertion of cubic environment to spherical environment****

There is a very useful program called Respam that will do the convertions for you....only problem is that it is in german!

Don't let that worry you, only an idiot will be unable to figure out how to use it

Link: http://respam.terratalk.de/

It's the file that says "download" at the very top. Open it up load your six images in and hit the button to convert the images into the required format (you can't miss it)

Save the image and that's it.

I've purchased some new webspace with a 250 gb/month limit, so These will be back up shortly.

To save yourself a lot of bandwidth, you might want to consider this:
- Make thumbnails of all your skymaps
- Display non-linking thumbnails in this topic for quick view of your skymaps
- Zip them all up into one file and host them on www.rapidshare.de
- Offer individual downloads via your new host, as an alternative for people with dialup or who just need one.

As long as at least one person downloads the skymaps per month, the file will stay on rapidshare's server, and you don't get stuck with the bandwidth usage. Plus, everyone has the opportunity to download them seperately if need be.

Huh, what do you mean? Do you mean tube/cylindrical mapping...? If so, then just create a skydome (preferably with a cube sphered 100%), cut it in half, map the texture to all the faces, switch to front view, in face mode press 'U' and select 'Cylinder'. Adjust the uv net accrodingly and that's it!

16-May-07, 23:50
I've been looking into this for a while to create space backgrounds for animations where the stars will blur with the rest of the scene. I tried blender's internal stars program and was well...it wasn't the right look. If I were doing trek, but since I'm not...

I was going to try to do it in post production, but since this was a hobby project I didn't have the space time. What I needed were high res space maps. I had been using Flaming Pear's inexpensive plug-in sets to create digital map paintings and decided to keep my camera still. Easy way to cheat.

I got all those scenes finished and rendered and now I was back to the problem of the ones where the camera would be tracking objects. So I read, and read, and read about HDRI and fisheye lens and the upteen programs that could take a fish eye and make a rectangular image, but I needed to go the otherway. Read many tutorials on Photoshop and none of those seemed to work.

Oh yeah, the kicker is I'm on mac. Not a windows in the house to boot (bad pun intended)

Well I was back on Flaming Pear's website and stunned to find a plug-in for photoshop called Flexify 2. So I'm playing around with it and it seems to take a rectangluar image and you can creae a mirror ball, polar, half-polar, and it will export your image into a 6-pane skybox map. Which then you can use to create a panorama as MadCow outlined.

I tested with a low res 1000x1000 map and it worked. The image quality sucked, but it work. When I moved the camera in blender the image changed....

I'm now working on a higher 3000x3000 resolution and going to export it to both mirrorball and polar and see which setting works the best. I'll post a tutorial and results tomorrow. (Takes a while to render on this machine in Photoshop. Still have CS1 and running it on a MacTel via Rosetta).

The plug-in isn't free, but only costs $35. Not that expensive in terms of plug-ins. The space pack was only $40. However, if you have Photoshop, you can download all the plug-ins for a 30 day free trial.

NICE !

Thx.

I'm looking for a full moon night sky map, but cant find that, even in commercial stuff.
Has anybody an idea, a link ?

@Roger: looks like a bug in the reflection mapping, got the X and Y mixed up with the Z when mapping Horizon. I replicated your issue. Rotating the objects does nothing. Anglemaps and Sphere work fine. Issue seems to be with Global and flat textures

what do you use to "render" them?

Great stuff, but I don't know how to use them. Anyone mind writing up a tutorial on how to use these angular and sphere maps? Thanks a lot.

You know, I almost forgot this thread existed!

Commiecomrade: You use blender to render them. They are designed to be used as backgrounds for your scenes.

mamba9: Using them is easy. load one of them into the 'world' section of the texturebuttons, Then in the worldbuttons, active these settings:

For Angular Maps (The full spheres with black borders)

'Real' 'Hori' and 'angmap'

For Spheremaps (The other ones)

'Real' 'Hori' and 'sphere'

I know that blender renders them, but how do you make them? how do you composite them together?

Using them is pretty easy. load one of them into the 'world' section of the texturebuttons, Then in the worldbuttons, active these settings:
For Angular Maps (The top ones)
'Real' 'Hori' and 'angmap'
For Spheremaps (The other ones)
'Real' 'Hori' and 'sphere'

I'm trying to understand the function of "Hori" ... without it, every World setting under "texture and input" seems to have no effect. I would have thought that I could have a 360 degree horizontal panoramic photo, (that did not include the full sky or all the lower earth area), and use it with "tube" or perhaps "sphere" however, this does not seem to be the case. Can anyone explain please ? Can this be done using World settings somehow ?

For some reason, the skyboxes aren't showing up on my computer.
I think this is another place where you can get them...

Those look real good, thanks a lot!!
I have a question about your tutorial though: the plane you use for the shaow is still visible in the reflection of the sphere, is there any whay to overcome this?

never mind, ray transp did the trick :)

there are 2 types of pcitures

you have the ones looking like a circle
and the other looking like a rectangle

which one goes with angular map and then one with speremap

for the sphere map do you need to add a sphere in blender?

now how do you compare this with mapping a sphere with a cylindrical map?

Thanks

I am having a problem. I just learned how to get these sky maps into blender but I am having problems. I have a plane that is in the sky and my sky map shows the ground and the sky. Is it possible to make it look like the plane is above the ground in the sky?

Also, i am having problems getting the image proportional to size of the plane. How can this be done?

Also, how does one use the round ones?
Just apply them to a sphere?

Thanks a lot!!!!!
The textures are also very beautiful!!!!
I used a skydome for making my sky, but I always had overlapping problems.
You helped me!!
But I have now another problem. In the Game Engine I don't see the map.
What I have to do?

thx

you sir, have once again won the internet....
But can the angular maps also serve in the game engine?

Sorry for not replying sooner, but this thread is so old that I forget to check back to see if anyone is having any issues.

About the game engine issue.....I honestly couldn't tell you....I've never used it. But to be honest it sounds about right that the game engine doesn't have angularmap support.

I think it would be possible to use the spheremap textures by first applying the texture to half a uv-sphere, then baking the texture to a uv map. Maybe I should make a tutorial on this.

Tedcase:

There is a video in the first post explaining how to use the round ones.

hey, I posted a question on your vimeo site about the anglemaps and the Razor tutorials. I see from your postings there that maybe you dont check them often. I was wondering if you could help me out with animating using the anglemaps, they seem to move with the camera, and also I was wondering when you will post part 2 of the razor tutorial. They are both unique, and therefore desirable to me. thanks!

Hello everyone. I am posting two .blends as examples of how to apply these maps in 2.56. Hope they are useful to someone who may not know how to apply them in Blender 2.56.

AngMap example for 2.56:
126350

SkyMap example for 2.56:
126349

Note!
I had to scale down and compress the sky maps to get the packed .blend files under the upload limit. To get the full quality renders, download an angmap and skymap from the first page of this thread and replace the image in each .blend with the appropriate one.

Well hope they are useful and have a good day,
An'W

Hi. Using Google Chrome I middle-mouse-button-click on the image I want. The image should then be loaded in a new tab that appears at the top of the screen. Switch to that tab. When the image is loaded, right click on it and from the menu that appears select "Save image as...". Save anywhere on your hard drive you want.

i tried some of the angular maps, and although they look awesome they are way too bright in my blender.
another problem is that objects in the scene don't cast shadows anymore.
looks anything but realistic to me as the objects look like they're just hanging in space...
am i missing something? can i get my shadows of my objects back somehow?
