Sculpting SoC - feedback team

Hi all,

for the sculpting summer of code project I’d like to have a team of artists skilled with sculpting and Blender to give feedback and suggestions.

In addition to this thread we will be using the wiki for bug and feature request tracking

http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/User:Jwilkins/GSoC2010/SculptFeedback

I’ll also do occassional surveys, for the surveys the comments section are particularly useful.

The current feedback surveys are

1) Most Used Brushes and Options

2) Brush Quality Survey

If you are experienced with sculpt tools, and would be interested in being part of the team, please post in here, preferably with a link showing an example of your sculpt experience.

I’ll be mentoring the sculpt project.

Some of the feedback I’d be interested in are suggested UI designs.

What are the most important brush and brush options to implement.

Problems with performance or quality that you encounter.

LetterRip

oh cool
im in!
i think fixing the clay brush would be the first thing i’d want to see

Ok, sounds good… agreed on the clay brush!

Hey, this sounds awsome LetterRip!!
I would like to give feedback too. I am not the specialist in UI Interface. But maybe some Brushsettings etc.
Here are some of my sculptings.

Nice sculpts ndee

Masking is missing. Would be great to have this.

+1 for the clay brush and masking.

its been covered by Nicholas Bishop’s project but he is been mentored by Brecht, http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/User:Nicholasbishop/SummerOfCode2010/Proposal, I assume this thread is for the project LetterRip is mentor of.

I’ve used the sculpting tools in 2.5 quite a lot and I think a few areas, even if improved and fixed just a little could really improve the experience.

Clay Brush - Everyone knows this needs fixing, any values over 500+ cause very bad artefacts, also holding down shift produces a noise like pattern on the mesh, it could be a feature, but I personally think it’s a bug.

Grab Brush - Having used the Grab brush in Zbrush there is a very big difference between the two, I’m not saying Zbrush has it completely nailed, but it’s a lot easier to move geometry around with out artefacts and messing up the mesh. Having the ability to mask areas, have greater control over fall-off and the ability to constrain a movement to X, Y, Z or normal would make it a much better tool.

Flatten Brush - This is just personal opinion and perhaps it’s the limitations of the sculpting system, but I find it weird that instead flattening an area, it instead acts like the draw brush with a low strength setting cutting into the mesh. It’s the same in 2.49b. I think it would be good if there was a way to average between two points on the mesh and the flattening brush would NOT sink the mesh further than that point. It’s pretty hard to explain this one, if I have time I’ll try and put some images together to illustrate the idea.

I understand this thread isn’t a feature request or anything like that but since I don’t have a sculpting gallery I’ll probably not be able to help out with the feedback.

EDIT: Is anyone else having problems with the Smooth Brush? It’s incredibly, on 32 and 64-bit builds. Could this be an issue with the brushing having to smooth across multiple patches?

Beg your pardon for my sculpting ingnorance, but i have one question:

Is possible to have an allready armatured character and brush sculpt over it, or will this totally brake and ruin the group/bone constraints?

Folks, let’s not turn this into a feature request or how-to thread. There’s other places for that

Letterrip - this feedback team seems like a great idea. I’m sure you’ll let me know if they encounter any horrendous bugs with multires too

+1 to improved clay tools being a priority. As another potentially very useful tool, may I suggest something similar to the zbrush Damien Standard Brush? What it is is a combination of pinch and draw in the same brush - it’s fantastic for adding creases and wrinkles.

Sculpting layers, ala mudbox, would be sublime.

gents I think there is a dev two posts above asking you not to turn this into a feature request thread

Hello, Jason here, I’m the student chosen for my proposal to improve the sculpting tools.

I agree the layers would be great but it is not part of my current proposal, although I’m hoping that it is something that will get done in the coming months.

Me and Tom are working on the brush UI, brush behavior, and brush options. I’m hoping to lay the groundwork to make it easy to add dozens of different presets, make the UI easier to use, and allow for more user customization. Also, fixing things like the clay brush is high priority.

I would like to be part of this project too. Some samples:

Take THAT, Tyrant Monkey! Apparently devs DO like it when users whine about feature requests XD

I’d like to help out - though I’d need to point out that I’m not familiar with sculpting outside of Blender. Whether that’s a blessing, a curse or completely irrelevant, I’ll leave up to you to decide  .

I’d like to be apart of the team aswell. I’m familiar with both Zbrush and blenders sculpting. I would be happy to give input on things to change in blender that would make me use zbrush less =)

About brushes, I would like to see in blender awesome slash brush, it allow to create fast and easy details like wrinkles, also options like gravity or lazy mouse are very handy. I don’t mention about layers and clay brush because it’s quite obvious, I can’t remember more right now but there is many things that should be improve in blenders’ sculpt tool, and I’d like to be part of the team ofcourse. I will upload some of my sculpts tomorrow.
