Array modifier for group instance?

I need to have a large number of group instances in an animation I am making with 2.53, so it occurred to me that I could use the array modifier. So I created a group instance and then I noticed that there was no modifiers section for it.

Is there another way I could do this? I don’t want to manually create hundreds of group instances and move them to their correct locations.

Couldn’t you just use a particle system scattered across a vertex group? Match your particle count to the vertex count and set the particles to never die.

If you want to use Array modifier, all object in the group need to be joined to make single object. If you want to keep all the parts, just make a duplicates and save it in different layer.

Gave it a try to create a solar farm.
