    The Giant Spaceship Thread

    Hi all,

Hopefully everyone's doing okay. If not, well, I hope things get better for you. =)

This thread has culminated in a short movie project called Plagarus. You can watch each part here.

Anyway, this is my latest project. It's a series of spaceships, more or less completed. Basically, I'm learning modelling. =)

    Ooh that looks rather awesome
I actually like the hull, the thing that bothers me are the squarish side plates. Imho adding round(er) once like the shape of your hull would look better.
If you do want to add stuff to hull, maybe some kind of hatches for escape pods or smaller ships? If this is the size I imagine it to be it won't be landing on a planet anytime soon, so it might need some smaller cargo ships to help with the transportation of supplies?

Hmm, you're kind of right about the plane things. I can make them a little rounder. I'm glad I didn't go about detailing them too much, yet. =D

Actually, it can travel through the atmosphere (which is why it's streamlined), but I was thinking about landing struts. They'd have to be quite tall in order to clear the lower cannon... hmm... landing gear on a spaceship is always tricky to get the right feel. Or, why does a spaceship have to have landing gear anyway? Why not just hover?

Anyway, thanks for the comment and help, I'll see about changing those wing things around! =)

That looks fantastic! I love how you've combined the angular plating with the roundness of the ship body. The turret barrels look a little basic, but since their job is pretty basic, not much needs to be done with them.

For landing gear, why not use those plates? The ones sticking out the sides. They look big enough to stabilize the ship.

And if your able, could you post a timelapse vid or write up a tut on how you make your greebles? All those little bits in the indentations and around the engines look really neat. I dont wanna ask for a blend file since I fear I'd just steal the mesh itself.
If you can't learn to do something well, enjoy doing it poorly.

Greebles were made using textures of mechanical stuff, as well as old game textures I dug up, like wires and junction boxes and whatnot. I just imported the picture into the 3D background, and then just built on top of it. Wires were done using curves. I guess I could do some vid tutes and put them on my Vimeo account. =)

That rocks! Love the design. One thing I would suggest you NOT do is to just cover the whole thing in greebles. I'd greeblize the 'bits that are not on the hull plates. For the hull plates, I'd add some flat panel detail then add lots of weathering on the texture.

Oooh, nice design. I like the front bit, reminds me of a Star Wars droid. I also like the back panels - they look like moveable armour to protect the engines. Maybe they could extend telescopically backwards, or something.

I agree with Tea Monster that you shouldn't cover the whole thing in greebles. Right now there's quite a nice balance between detail and blank areas. I imagine the smooth parts of the hull will be textured to have a few panels but not much more. Maybe some window lights ?

I'm not sure about landing struts, it looks designed for space... doesn't seem stable enough to land anywhere. In the first picture I get the impression that the lower turrets could be replaced with rockets (partially sunk into the hull) for hovering. I don't know why, but it reminds me a little of the ships in the Matrix, which could only hover.

    Anyway, very nice work.

Well, an update is in order! I've been working on more detail. I was going to add more greebles to the hull, but I think everyone is right that I shouldn't really go overboard with them.

I DID put some nice recessed sections in the hull and added greebles to the recessed areas. Hopefully this gives something of a Millennium Falcon look to it. =)

I made the engines bigger, so that they filled more of the empty space on the stern, and put little greebles on some areas of the smooth hull just to break up the monotony of the whole thing.

As for landing gear, I like the idea of a spaceship that always hovers. Maybe it docks by sliding up to the side of a huge gantry or something. There are plenty of hatches on the sides!

Anyway, please keep the helpful comments coming! =D

    Updating again.

I'm just about done with detailing, I think. I'm not thrilled with the simplicity of the nose section, and I'm not pleased with some of the greebles. =( I think I might have spoiled it. Oh well, I'll keep working on some of the details!

Almost time for texturing, methinks. =)

Preliminary texturing, currently without UV mapping.

Almost all greebles are still untextured, along with support struts and engines.

I'll unwrap everything, and then use projection painting to apply the hull plate look more uniformly over the hull, eliminating the seams--hopefully. =) Then, from there, I'll just have the general high resolution UV mapped hull plate texture affect all applicable materials via multipliers.

    Hopefully that makes sense.

UV mapping nearly done! Wow. That took a lot less time than I thought it would! =D

Oh well. Mostly done with UV mapping--nose and main body. Some other spots might merit it, too, like the wings, though I'm actually kind of happy with how they turned out with simply cube projection.

    Still to do:

    1. Finish texturing mechanical bits (i.e., greebles, engines, guns and support pylons)
    2. Build a rudimentary cockpit inside the window!
    3. Build some airlocks!

And then she'll be just about done! Yay. =)

Well, I'm certainly more excited about this project than anyone else, but that's the way it usually is with artists, anyway!

Things done: greebles are textured. Engines are nearing completion.

Lookin' good. Would be nice to see it in a space environment so we can see how everything looks in it's natural habitat.

If I were to nit-pick (and this IS focused critique, so I will), I'd say make the exterior fins all one colour, it will help to differentiate them from the main hull. I'd also put some more colour variation on the side-greebles.

Reminds me of the Harbinger, the republic ship from the beginning of KotOR 2. Looks great so far, but I'm curious as to how it would land on a planet surface.

Ahh, KotOR. The best video games ever devised by mortals. =D

Anyway, I can make the wings either all blue or all white... which? I shall see!

awesome ship! for the gear it could dock to a space station?
your textures rock do you make them photoshop? gimp? photos?

    Thanks for the comments! =D

The materials are painted on using textures from CGTextures.com. Their concrete textures are especially good, their metal ones perhaps a little less so. =)

...for the gear it could dock to a space station?
I'm thinking that the ship can enter the atmosphere (considering it has some aerodynamic styling), but it can only dock at the side of some loading ramp or something. It can't actually set down on the ground or a pad, it has to continually hover in place. =)

Hey, looks great. Kinda reminds me of Chriss Foss's ship designs. Perhaps a bit more weathered texture I'd say, if anything.

Ooh, I looked up Chris Foss, quite impressive! =)

Another great place to get ideas for spaceships is www.conceptships.blogspot.com. Quite a great repository of spaceship designs of all shapes and sizes. This particular ship design that I made, though, didn't come from anything, really, except me doodling around thinking, "if I owned a spaceship... what would I want it to look like?" =D

Update with re-textured wings, and some openGL renders of a WIP airlock, and another greeble. =)

Detailing the airlock area. Not entirely happy with it, yet.

I'm not sure exactly what details should be applied, as I've never actually made a sci-fi airlock hatch before. =\
