Placing vertices into a new object

I have a plane of traced out text with a solidify modifier on it, and I’m trying to make one part of the text to look like it’s embedded into a shield, and the other part of the text to look like its popping out of the shield. Is there a way that I can transfer the vertices of the text onto the shield object so that way I can just extrude both of them? Thanks c:

JW’s latest cookie tip may help with that if the shield is flat enough.

You may not want to add vertices at all. It does depend upon your needs.

Here is an example of the emboss/engrave technique using sub-division surfaces and displacement mapping. This technique does produce a heavy mesh. Also minor render anomalies can occur as you see in the image. But if the object is in motion and has vector blur applied, you may never notice them.

To change your object just change the displacement image map. This makes it convenient if you have to make several different shields for different clans or concepts. Once you are happy with the results, just apply the modifiers and you will have a dense mesh. Decimate as needed for final delivery, if for game.
