Pixar releases their patented subdiv libraries

Well it seems Pixar has released their patended subdiv libraries as opensource… Under the Microsoft Public License… not sure if this is compatible with Blender’s license…

http://graphics.pixar.com/opensubdiv

what if possible would be the advantage of their version?

It is written that it is limited OSX compatible. I wonder what BF would do about that since Blender is All platform compatible.

The license it’s released under is not compatible with the GPL it seems, so we cannot use it anyway.

What do they mean with “limited OSX”? Either it works or it doesn’t right?

too bad Pixar seems to have some nice options:

But isn’t Blender already using a similar subsurf algorithm ?
Blender subusrf is using the Catmull-Clark one , and Catmull is Pixar current president.

So how is that Pixar release better than the Catmull-Clark algorithm ?

As far as I know Pixar put in few extra tools. Blenders SDS is good but has some flaws.

I thought it was released under the Microsoft Public License – http://www.opensubdiv.com/?page_id=98 ?

EDIT : Seems like MPL is compitble with GPL v3… not v2 – http://www.opensourcelegal.org/?page_id=532

yahoooo +1 for integrate this in blender

As noted, we can’t use this in Blender under the Microsoft Public License. I’ve emailed one of their developers to see if there’s any chance of changing the license, but what with Siggraph about to start I imagine they’ll be a bit busy just now.

hey Nicholas you are really fast hehehehe that’s what I like about you…!

Nicholas

good luck with that one. It would be great for Blender to improve their SDS tools.

i hate microsoft and I do not trust a single thing they do…even open source…they are one of those evil empires that, even if they think they are helping, are generally hurting the user…I do not want to mix anything blender to that code, based on my arrogant(self assured) hatred for MS alone.

Aaaaand since none of this code is actually from Microsoft… what’s your point?

OpenSubdiv is covered by the Microsoft Public License, and is free to use for commercial or non-commercial use

Thats it. Blender should stay GPL, but anyone can get ideas (just ideas, not existing code) from other software and try to get them into blender. Thats open source.

?

depend on how talent our developers?

What does pixar subd have that Blender doesn’t has??

It is more powerful in single edge / vertex cases. Ie blender subD cant make the sharp spikes from a single vertex in the video.

performance!
One can run animation with PixarSubd level 3-4 on the model with high framerates 40-60fps, while blender subd will give only 3-4 fps
