Object Missing Material Node

Sorry for the Noob question, I’ve created a sphere and would like to experiment with materials, but the Node Editor empty. I created a material under the materials tab thinking that would generate one, but no luck. I do create a default material node

thanks

It does.
Have you set the node editor for material nodes rather than either texture or composite nodes ?

Cycles or Blender render? did you hit numpad ‘point’ button to center everything in the NE?

What you are after is an idiotically tiny, fairly meaningless icon at the bottom of the node editor, here is a screenshot of the frigging thing:

A great way to fix this would be an “Edit in Node Editor” button in the material or texture thing where you initially set the bloody things up, that would save people a lot of hunting around for icons the size of a pinhead.
