I’m working on a scene based in 1920s New York. Will hopefully try to get some good atmosphere in using mist/global volumetrics.

Looks interesting. Do a search on Charles Cushman Photos of New York and you’ll see lots of color slides of New York. They’re from the '40s and 50s but they should give you some ideas for colors and weathering.

I’ve done a bit more modelling. I’ve made use of a car model from blendswap by “serta”, which will provided a good starting point.
I’ve tried to go for a blown out look in the background, which hasn’t quite worked as planned… it will probably change at some point!
