Alt+B masking and snapping.

So, I’m doing retopology on a model and I really like to hide away bits of the basemesh using alt+b, but I discovered that when you do this, it still snaps to the invisible parts of the model.

Is there any way to contain the snapping function to only the visible parts of the model?

Example, I’m doign the legs, and I use alt+b to isolate only one leg, but when I move in to snap on the inner side of the leg, it snaps to the invisible other leg instead.

Hide vertices or use Mask modifier with vertex groups.

Yeah hiding vertices won’t work in object mode. Adding vertex groups to quickly mask something seems excessive? The alt+b tool is perfect, if only it affected snapping!
