VERY new beginner needs some help

Hey folks… Been trying to read and read and read… Unfortunately, I’m stumped on something that is probably pretty simple.
I am trying to follow the tutorial here, which is a simple mushroom tutorial. However, when I get to the part where I change my mode button to Texture Paint, it falls apart on me. The object turns a pink color and if I try to ‘paint’, I get a ‘MISSING DATA’ and ‘MISSING MATERIALS’ error. (As seen in the screen shot).

Any ideas…

Appreciate any help and I’m really sorry for the super newbie issue.

set the engien to “Cycles” (you can find it at the top of your window) and then follow this easy steps. go to material, click the tiny dot next to collor, and select image texture. then open the image you wish to apply to the mesh.

press Alt + Z to see how it looks on the mesh. Shift Z to see how it looks when its rendered. Keep in mind, lightsorce is needed to get a nice idea of what it will look like when you render it.

lightsorces wont affect anyting in textured viewport (alt Z)

Texture painting has changed significantly since the Blender version presented in that tutorial (2.65). You can skip the step of adding the red image via UV/Image editor. In that “Missing Data” panel you see the “Add Paint Slot” drop down. Click it, and choose “Diffuse Color”. The settings for the image will appear (resolution, base color, etc), pick whatever you need, click OK and you should be good to go. But don’t forget to save that new image using the UV/Image editor later, or you’ll lose all your work when you close the file. The later step for creating the texture in the tutorial can also be omitted, since it’s now done automatically when you add a paint slot.

@finalbarrage: Suggesting new users that are trying to figure out a tutorial to “just” switch render engine is a very peculiar idea of support. Remember that while you’re already familiar with Blender and know your way around it doesn’t mean that everybody does, especially newcomers with questions about basic things unrelated to Cycles in any way. Oh, and on another note, unrelated to this thread, please at least spell-check the terminology you use in support replies. It’s “subdivision”, not “subdevition”.

Some visuals

The default paint mode is now bound to material assigned textures, so it adds them in the texture stack

But it’s also possible to change that mode to paint directly on the image, like it used to be in older versions

Thanks everyone… I was able to get it painted with the help of the replies… I really appreciate it… It looked like crap (especially since the lighting was all screwy when I rendered it). But it was my first project in Blender and the point was to learn to use the program…

Again, I really do appreciate the help.

Btw - Any suggestions on similar tutorials that would help me get my feet under me?
