volumetric lighting

Here’s my test for volumetric lighting. The first image is the one I’m trying to match.


The second one is my first test for lighting. im having a bit of trouble getting that crisp falloff of the spot lamp

Hi.
You model some sort of lampshade, for example from above half part of UV sphere (and little scaled in Z). Then you place a Point lamp just inside it, the same way than a real lamp.
The size of the cone of light depends how inside the lampshade you place the Point Lamp. If you can not see the cone of light, increase the intensity of the Point Lamp.
I think you can not get such a good result as the image you show without compositing.

You could also just use a spot lamp if the geometry of the lamp won’t be visible. Or it isn’t something you’re particularly worried about.
