Unexpected Shadow effect

I’m a real noob in Blender and wonder if anyone can explain why my shadows turn out so weird in renders?
Instead of the expected shadow with a gradient from darkest at contact to lighter further away, I get the darkest shadow (opaque black) a little bit away from the object. It’s like there’s something eliminating the shadow closest to my model…
In the attached image the model is sitting right on the plane that receives it’s shadow (no offset). I get this effect in all my rendered images.

I’m using v.2.74 and the Blender Render engine.

Bella we are not ignoring you but simply have nothing to go on. I never pass up a chance to play in BI but this would be like shooting in the dark. At least a screen shot of the Lighting panel would be of some help. Even more help would be a link to a uploaded Blend file on PasteAll.org.

A guessing game? Nice :stuck_out_tongue:

Could it be AO (ambient occlusion)?

Next time do make an example/test file to help solve problems.
