Where are My Shadows?

Why can’t I see shadows in my 3D viewport? And why does the light not shine on the sides of my object in texture mode?

I’ve tried the following:

  • Checking all World Properties settings
  • Checking all property settings for the Sun object
  • Checking all Display settings in the N-window of the 3D viewport
  • Checking all settings for the objects in the scene

I remember seeing shadows early on when I first started using Blender, but I think I switched something off at some point and they have never been seen again except in renders.

Here’s one of my files:

I want my shadows!

You want to make viewport renders?

The sides of your model is dark because you have only one light source - a sun - facing directly to the ground. Add some fill lights.

No. I put the sun right beside the side of the cube and it makes no difference. Adding more lights will only take away from any shadowing effect, so I don’t see how that would help.

Can someone who knows Blender well please help me?

I can’t look at your file at the moment but keep in mind that sun lamps do have a direction. Even if it’s sitting next to your object it might not show any shadows depending on how it’s pointing.
