How can I lock bones during animation so they are independent of character root.

For example, blocking the hands while I animate a character who does push-ups

For starters, you posted your question in the wrong section. Number two, there might be something wrong with the setup of the rig. If your rig is using IK constraints, then the hands should not be moving at all. Let me take a look at the rig and I can figure out what’s wrong.

That is quite the improvement. I know that the character is pushing to failure, but you don’t have to shake the torso so much. At the point of failure, the person is slowly pushing off the floor and then you can let it fall.
