Blender crashes x-server on my debian powerppc!

Hello friends.

I installed debian on my ppc G4, after that I installed blender and when I launch it the x crashes and show me the login window, I need to login and if I try to use blender it always hapen.

Please help. I searched trougth the internet and find nothing.

Thanks a lot,

Alessandro Bragnon

Have you tried ‘blender -w’ it could be causing a bad interaction with your window manager, which when it dies would result in X resetting and thus logging you out. The -w will force blender to operate in windowed mode, thus decreasing the likelyhood of a bad window manager interaction.

White_volg, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately even opening it from a terminal using “blender -w” did’nt work, x crashes anytime. I don’t know what to do.

If you could help. I did’nt figured out what is making x crashes.

Thanks a lot anyway.

If I find something I’ll post here.

Alessandro

Have you look at your Xerrors log?
Somewhere (/var/log, /var/adm, /var/tmp, /tmp, ~/.Xsession) there should be a Xerrors file… I’ll be online tonight… try and catch me at [email protected] or on Yahoo Messenger, white_volg.

White_volg I send you a mail with my x errors messages found on “/var/log/XFree86.0.log.old”. I’m putting it here for others to view it

the errors are at the end of the text.

Thanks a lot my friend!

Does something simple like glxgears work?

(I haven’t read your log…)

Having looked at the log, the most notable bit was that the X server in question is a Debian modified Xfb (Frame Buffer). Many of the framebuffer X servers play unstably at best with OpenGL. Notable exceptions being Solaris on Sparc where the framebuffer X server was designed to cooperate well with OpenGL on sparc hardware with Sun video cards (It’s still thrashy on x86). ATI cards are notorious for needing ‘special handling’ in regards to OpenGL, thus I’d recommend switching to the X server compiled with ATIspecific routines to get more stable OpenGL performance.
This may not be the cause, but it is the most likely…

the result afeter launching glxgears:

alessandro@debian:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension “XFree86-DRI” missing on display “:0.0”.

Please, how to switch to this X server?

Yet trying over the net. Anyway your help is really usefull. I’m learning a lot and been sure with your help it will work!

Thanks a lot,

alessandro[/quote]

I found at net a system exactally like mine. And figured out the video card was diferent on the XF86Config-4 file created at debian instalation. So I just changed these lines on mine:

Section “Device”
Identifier “Generic Video Card”
Driver “fbdev”
Option “UseFBDev” “true”
EndSection

by this one of the system at net:

Section “Device”
Identifier “Generic Video Card”
Driver “radeon”
Option “AGPMode” “4”
Option “UseFBDev” “false”
# Do not enable this, it crashes the Mac mini:
Option “AGPFastWrite” “off”
EndSection

and it just worked!! I know the issue wasn’t professional, sorry. With my little experience I could just crash my system, but needed to try this.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Over all to White_volg that helped me even by e-mail.

Thanks a lot.

Alessandro.
