Using Blender to render Gemstones and Jewelry

Hello all. I’ve stumbled onto this wonderful program. I would like to use it to render 3D pieces of jewelry that I want to design and wonder if anyone’s used it for that purpose. More specifically…has anyone used Blender to render gemstones?? One would have to take into acount the refractive index of the material being modeled (topaz, corundum, diamond, etc).

Thanks,

Bill Harbour

Welcome to Elysiun and blender.
Yes, all of your ideas are very possible.

Check out the latest blender art magazine http://www.blenderart.org.
You will need to use YafRay for your jewel realisms (http://www.yafray.org)

Good luck.

Look on this site it will give you an idea on trasnparency of materiel

:: feeblemind.org ::::
Didacticiel: la transparence - Tutorial: transparency

and this one for a more complete list of refractive index

http://www.3d-designer.dk/resource/ior.html

hope it helps you

Look in the WIKI book also for mirror effect - ect…

and it also depend on lighting around in the room
but this will come with time and lot of practice

but with time you will learn to master it

The next version of blender’s internal renderer is going to have some interesting rendering effects added for crystals, glass, ice, etc. Has to do with the thickness of materials and how light is bent inside that thickness. Should be neat for the superman style crystals.
