Hello, haven't been here for a while.
This is my second normal-mapped 3d model (first one is HERE).

This is a lowpoly weapon for our indie gamedev team's FPS game Vortex of Hostility. I was given a 10k triangle limit for Level of Detail 0 model (most detailed one for 1st person). Texture - 2048 x 2048

Modeling and UV mapping in Blender, normalmaps baked in XNormal (freeware), textured in Photoshop with a tablet.

All realtime previews are captured in XNormal.

So a quick process:

I started with a concept sketch, i had this idea for a long time - to make a SPAS12, and P90 hybrid.

Then created a hipoly models for normalmap:

..put attention to detail and shapes of gun to make the first person view look good

some more detail around first person view

EDIT: so after i had both - long and short high poly models of shotgun, i created a low poly model.
moving parts: pump, trigger and casing-ejection-hole lock are separate objects

then created an accurate UV map:

the texture place around 1st person view are more detailed than the rest of weapon.

Level of Detail (LOD) models:

+ normalmap:

So the texturing part.
This is a paintwork sketch:

and voila:

+ some screenshots form game editor

Thats more or less it for now.
C&C please..

umm there isn't such a tool, i doubt any mesh poly reducer will work any better than yourself

i actually took same model and reduced triangles manually, and tried to keep shotgun's silhouette unchanged. I just pinned UV's edge verticles before reducing polys and when finished, unwrapped again, so basically keeping UV's identical.

Excellent - 5 stars for you.

Lets sit down and talk about how you did this.
You started out with a concept sketch then you made a high poly model.
Ok... I understand that and I imagine the rest of the community does.

What I don't understand is the unwraping part.
you said ...
Quote:
then created an accurate UV map:
How?

How do you know where to put the seams?

How did you avoid it turning into a mess?

Would you talk about that and show us
images of the seams and your unwraping process
of the high poly model?

Amazin' ! 5 stars in the pot for you! This is one of the best lowpoly/game models i have seen in a long time! Looks like Next-gen but with not wasting as much polies as they do.
And the difference between the LOD's is small except on the smaller details.

Wow, the normal maps look fantastic and the model looks almost just as good in the game previews as it does in the renders. Is this shotgun to go along with your trooper game model?
It was nice to see your workflow with the conceptual drawings and such .

Great job.

It isn't the easiest part. It takes a lot of time and patience... and practice
I guess i spent almost a day unwrapping this one.

So ill do a quick unwrapping tutorial soon

Oh and you don't need UV for high poly model.
