Hi all,
I just modeled a 2D shape, ![]() But after extruding, the normals seems to mess =/ ![]() I already tried to recalculate normals outside, but I think blender gets confused. The reason that this may be happening is that I build the faces of the 2D shape "manually", like this ![]() Thus, I want to know if it's possible to correct these normals using some way other than Ctrl+N or to build the face of the 2D shape correctly (using F won't work) Thanks, |

First you should Ctrl-A your object if you can do that
because you don't use all the object's dimensions per say go to Tools in F9 and set the draw normals Select all faces Re-calculate all the normal Ctrl-n chek that all the normal are outside if not then select the one that are not and Flip the normal Note: you can select one face then Shift -G and select Normal this may select all the inside normals - but does not always work? if not then you have to select all the faces manualy then flip them Salutations |

may also be smoothing
try "set solid"

All the normals seems to be pointing outside, but even though, there are darkened areas =/
Yes, it's smooth, but it is wrong because of the normals =/ I'm wondering if I just created a mobius strip, lol.

can you upload a file we can have a look on it!
but if you have something like a moebius figure then that's not good and won't work Salutations |

In Object mode, do Ctrl-A and choose the first option. That often corrects problems with funky normals.

I tried Ctrl-A and the first option, but that didn't solved the problem.

like I said - it smoothing
hit the set solid button and it will fix it the reason it looks funny is because blender is trying to smooth a large flat area which is impossible to do

you have internal faces in your model, these are causing the problems

There are no internal faces

![]() There are some internal faces and in the image above the indicated vertices are not connected to the highlighted faces. You need more geometry to connect it al together as one complete mesh. Applying an EdgeSplit modifier also makes it look better. Richard

sorry, had a closer look and there are some internal faces in the top shelves
you can find them by selecting non-manifold verts (Ctrl Alt Shift M) - in edit mode it's also in the select menu and the edge spilt modifier will take care of the smoothing issue
