Well, it's finally done! HD Render Man and I worked our butts off for 8 long days, chatting on Skype nearly the entire time, throwing concept art back and forth, rendering, file-transferring, critiquing, rendering again... It's been a looong project, and we really had to rush near the end (because we didn't know we had until midnight today to work) but we're quite satisfied with the result.

I made the lowres meshes in Blender and HD did the sculpting in Zbrush. We would make a beauty render in Blender, but the final files are so huge that the computer explodes when even one is imported to Blender.

Low-res:

(Yeah, HD did that one practically by himself; he even had to modify the mesh anyway. )

Final (rendered in Zbrush):

It looks really good. I like the materials. Is it using some sort of a HDRi reflection sphere?

I love the details - how much is displacement and how much is straight up sculpted polys? Wow, really good concept to finished piece.

Thanks everyone!

@craigomatic: That's 100% raw polygons you're looking at there.

By the way, it turns out I might be able to make a Blender Internal render. I'm able to import the predator fish without fatal slowdown, so I think if I import the pieces one at a time and switch them to bounding box display mode, I'll be able to manage.

Oh, and another by-the-way: We've started a blog for our little studio (minus a domain name and custom css for now, though...) at http://virtualanvil.wordpress.com.
