Hey all! I'm really hoping what I'm about to do isn't frowned upon in the forum, however!

I've spent the last year writing a script, and have acquired the means to shoot a feature length live action HD movie with outstanding production values this August (the schedule is intensive), and it's time for me to start recruiting some CG guys. Normally I would do all the CG myself, but this is just too darn much.

So to say it straight, I'm looking for volunteers to help me create and complete all of this digital imagery. Our standards are high, but the results will be worth it the extra work. And if things go according to plan, we're going to have a pretty rockin' render farm!

For more information, check out the SubjectCG website, or the movie website, www.subjectc.com

Of course, I wouldn't post this without a lot to already show!
However, due to a contractual agreement, until I get a signed non-disclosure agreement, I can't show it to you....

Except for this animation. Created entirely in Blender, except for AE compositing.

VIEW THE ANIMATION:

AVI Version (Best Quality)

Quicktime Version

Windows Media Version

No, the excessive zooms are not representative of the film as a whole.

More on the SubjectCG page (as much as I have permission to show, anyway).
We'd love to have you. If you're interested, check out the page!

Rad.

EDIT: Huh. That whole "resizing the images" thing doesn't seem to be working.

Hey mrdodo... good to hear/see.

To everyone who doesn't know him.. mrdodo's been around for a while and makes good on his words. His posts are trustworthy.

Dude... if I can do something let me know, I have lots to do but I can surely make you a nicely animatable model or something

Awesome!! The animation looks freaking Hollywoodish. May I ask why the camera seems to be on a floating ship? Could you make it more like being held by a man in a commotion?

Woah! Amazing indeed! Great job with models, textures and lights. The animation looks a bit "weird", but I think it's a test... great.

Great shots there! The storyline is also quite interesting.

Sorry I wouldn't have the time (or the skills yet) to contribute, but I look forward to seeing the results.

Just out of interest - why do you use After Effects over the in-built compositing in Blender?

Hey! Thanks for the responses!

MACOUNO! Hello again! Awesome! I would be honored to have you working with us as much as your schedule allows.

Thanks, @ndy and Hippie

AndyD, sadly, no lips to be synched.

Psh. Hush, Sago. I wrote the script to Ideality when I was sixteen with a friend over the course of a matter of nights, SBFP didn't have a script (just an outline). And the executive producer wouldn't back the project if he thought the script was totally rad.

Notably, to work on the project, we have to have everyone sign a non-disclosure volunteer work agreement (to protect ourselves, you know) and after that, you'd be able to read the script.

Craig, haha. Yeah. You bring up a valid point. Back when I wrote the script my thoughts were, "HEY! It's been AGES since there've been giant robots in a movie!". Notably, the robots aren't in it much.

Tyrell, you MAY ask, and I may reassure you that that is definitely not the look of the film. It was my first time experimenting with animating the zoom in Blender, kind of as an experiment, and I learned a few important lessons. The CG will be created to match (and almost always comped into) the footage shot by our DP (very sharp guy).

EnV: Indeed! Character animation is my weak point, which is why I'm exciting about some of the responses I'm getting via email! But yeah, thanks!

leojS: Easy answer: I like using After Effects better, and I do many things with it I wouldn't have the first idea how to do in Blender (I've been using AE far longer than I've used Blender). In blender I have to spend a bunch of time figuring out how to do it and make it look how I want (admittedly due to a lack of experience); I've used AE so long I can usually do whatever without even thinking about it.

That's easy. AE is much better and easier to use for compositing than Blender.

Edit: never mind. Too late.

I'd love to help out with compositing if you need it Mrdodobird. I'll have to see if I can't dig up enough stuff to throw a reel together for you guys once I have some time after the compositing contest. How soon do you need submissions? Of course, compositing is a lot of fun and you may want to do all of that yourself!

I'm not sure about that Sago. Depends on the task (and I'm addressing this as "compositing only"). You certainly have to know precisely what is going on behind the scenes in Blender but then you can't be really creative if you don't know your tools!. I use both and some things are easier in Blender and some in After Effects. Blender's biggest hole right now is the complete lack of built-in roto/mask tools for which AE7 (despite it's weak roto toolset!) is better. Other than that it's really the classic node vs layer debate.

Hey Shaw! We don't need submissions in a huge hurry. To be honest, we wont' be doing much compositing until we wrap the shoot in August. The stuff I'm hoping to be working on in the meantime is primarily modeling and texturing, 1.) so post time is shorter afterward, and more importantly, 2.) so we'll have some sort of reference for better CG live action integration and interaction on set.
