I like the idea, a lot. Does it have any dynamic properties, like moving when the object deforms?

Maybe it's just my pitiful lack of node knowledge, but what's the advantage here?
It wouldn't let you do bump or displcement mapping though (or is there a node for that too?) which is what you would want for cloth.
How is this different from using the colour textures and stretching it via the material?
Or is it just another method of doing it?

You use the node material and apply it on Nor or Disp as you would any material AFAIK

I use such way of a fabric as a background. It animated, animation is made through Z ofset a material. It only imitation of a fabric received help Composit node. As to normal or Disp. I did not use them, all deformations are received with blur node

Itself did not try, but I think it is possible to help Displasment node deform any picture, for example a flag about or already written down Avi a format to use as a texture. It is necessary to experiment
