I thought I would occupy a bit of time this month modelling a watch.

UPDATE** This is one of those projects I just couldn't leave alone. I thought you can't have an expensive watch without a case to keep it in. New image attached (All Blender Internal).

In the future, try to do something useful with your spare time.

...

Just kidding! This is fantastic! The materials might use a bit of work, but the modeling is just great. It even looks like you beveled the numbers on the edge.

Great work! 4*

Thanks for the comments on my modelling. It is fairly detailed but using Spin Dup there isn’t that much modelling, most of the detail is simple repeats around the watch centre. The only non-modelled part is the numbers on the front of the case, which are normal mapped from an image.

I think I have mentioned on previous posts that materials are my weak point. A lot of what I do is metal-based components, If anyone knows of a quick and easy way of producing procedural metals I would be very grateful. Reflections in ray based chromes & gold’s get complex and overpower the model if you are not careful and UV mapping textures on complex models takes ages!

Inestical I have attached a screen grab in wire view.

Watchthis. 145,000 vert’s. It runs OK on my old Athlon.

Regards
Rob

Nice model, but you could do quite better for the render, no ?

Great modeling! I think your materials might be fine, I would work on the lighting first. It also might help to work on the reflections. Try googling for light setups used when photographing jewelry and then try to recreate that in Blender.

Great details.

Oh, check out the OSA filters as well for bringing out even more details in the renders.

this is a first class model suffering under a 3rd-class render! I think one of the blenderart magazines a while back had a feature on how to do really good brushed metal materials. It might be worthwhile for you to take a look. They really got the specularity to look real in that tut.

Definetly spend more time on the materials and lighting. This model is good and deserves it.

Excellent model, I like your eye for detail. 5 stars! (Yet another one screaming for .nk materials in Indigo...)

Thanks for the comments. I still need to work on the lighting but for now I have had a go at mapping an elongated noise texture onto the watch body and using a freshnell shader to give a satin-brushed effect.

The first image I think is a little too much? The second gives a much more subtle result. Which is more like the finish I am after. What do you think?

Thanks for the comments. I thought I would continue with this one so I have modelled a case to keep the watch in.

New image in first post.
