http://www.blender.org/development/c...render-baking/

Improvements are still pouring in, and now a high poly object can be baked onto a low poly one and can also be baked in different spaces.

One thing is for sure, for BGE users who uses normal map GLSL shaders, this will be useful to them too. So this can be used for better quality in both rendering and the BGE

Is there anything that isn't being added in 2.5???
Compared to 2.5 2.45 will look like a toy. (or maybe Wings3D )

something that will make people talented, unfortunately. It's a little sad to consider that people are still capable of making complete crap, no matter how many shiny tools they have.

EDIT: In case anyway misinterprets this. I did not mean shadow-bane, I just mean in general.

Blackboe hits the mark, not even Blender 3.00 will have a "make an awsome image" button. Besides, if it did and you tried to sell it, you'd have a big disadvantage as you didn't make it with your own talent.

Many people who sell products only have a talent for selling.

You're very much on it.
Was talking about film making today with some guys and the topic quicly lead to "young film makers want to use all the latest tech... but what they usually fail to see is that the script sucks and no matter how much tech you throw at it... it will still suck"

The same's about 3D.
The WIP section will still be full of "shiny spheres" and "bounching balls"

Harsh, but I agree with it. It really is sad that people keep looking forward for new features and let the old "new" features rot away.

This feature is one of the features that will be left for dead when Blender 2.51 arrives, because then the developers will add a green Shrek button, which totally removes the need for object baking because the Shrek's will be automatically generated in high and low detail, will contain normal maps on the fly, and most important of all: the function will also offer the user an option to put the newly created Shrek into Shrek-space, which is obviously a much better space than camera, world, object, tangent, view, light or any other space in existence.

Therefore, I declare this functionality to be useless as of the day the green Shrek button is added to Blender.

Yeah, but if everyone's using Shrek space, things would get boring and the industry would die. I think

a quick test

in first image my original low-poly and high=poly meshs

Low-Poly : Fa 1200 &- with sub-surf level 2 : Fa 18928
High Poly : Fa 1.477.632

and here is the result after Tangent normal map baking

the speed of baking is unbelievable - a few seconds on 2048*2048 map resolution

many many tanks for all the developers ^_^

The normal map baking would also be good for people who use sculpt mode to sculpt objects and bake to a low res mesh to avoid too many polygons and speed up rendering.

I would like to mention that not just gaming is affected in a positive way - this definitely paves the way for easier animation of detailed characters. Those examples by moh taia and broken are just flipping sweet.... I have to wait, but hopefully by the time I can try this it will be better explained in process. I have a habit of wrecking things until I see the right steps first :P

So this will help Peach with details in the trees and such, no?

Craigo

edit: I wonder if renderdemon will be testing his sculpts with this......
