I found a pretty sweet little application called Virtual box. I was having a hard time with VMware workstation when doing the apricot builds for 32bit linux. So, I went and gave the open source alternative a try.
http://www.virtualbox.org/ This is great if you want to learn Linux, and you do not want to borque your partition table. You can just use this, and stay in the comfort of windows untill you feel adept enough to do a full linux install. It is also handy if you are a linux user, and you need to use a windows application that WINE dose not support. I like it because I do not have to boot into Linux to do my linux builds, I can just set everything up, and minimize the window, and do my work in windows. Going to try solaris tonight and Desktop BSD.... Hopefully I can do some builds for those guys too

the good thing about virtualbox is, it seems to be faster and more responsive than vmplayer - at least under ubuntu 8.04 64bit. windows "boots" in seconds in the virtualbox, i can assign as much RAM as i like, 128MB grafic-memory, have a very comfortable control over USB-devices, shared folders, LAN, and easy to adjust screen-sizes. if it would only use more than just 1 of my 4 (quad)cores....

I got it to use 2 processors, there is a setting under CPU. 2 is the limit though.
This is with the windows version, I am not sure if it works under linux. |

Been using Virtualbox for nearly a year now.Smaller than Vmware, about as fast and with an Open Source edition, it seems a natural choice. I'm running it on linux (Ubuntu).
I only use it to install XP games which I then run under wine. Oh and for Sonicstage. Sony software is terrible. Koba

Hello.
This is neat! I am going to give it a try. I hate having to dual boot. If I can just convert the files in Virtualbox, i can stay in windows where all of my hardware works properly. Thank you. |

I've used Virtualbox for about a year, although I hardly use it anymore since Wine is becoming more sufficient, especially for games.
If you're on a Windows host, I prefer AndLinux, which is sort of like the opposite of Wine. Although 90% of the time, I just use cygwin.

Very good find thanks. My only complaint is that it only allows 1 processor, but I am still going to install it. |

Can it be. Do my eyes deceive me? Don't tell me Blender users are disliking the UI and strange handling of some other software. Last edited by shr1k; 27-Jun-08 at 03:37. |

How can I run Ubuntu 8.04 fullscreen on win xp?
Looking with google I got it to work. I'm a newb at this this. When ubuntu has started with Viritualbox. Go to the menu 'Devices' and select 'Install Guest addition'. (not in ubuntu but the menu above ubuntu) It adds in Ubuntu desktop a CD icon with the name VBOXADDITIONS_1.6.2_31466. Double click or if its open copy the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run to desktop. Then you have to run the installation trough a terminal. Open Terminal. Write: cd Desktop Write in the terminal this: sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run Write your password. Now it should install it. I've tried Virtualbox before but it didn't support 64 bit Ubuntu and that was a deal breaker for me.... I'll have to check it out and see if they support it now.

yea, I am pretty sure they have 64bit OS's now... it was like that (non 64 bit) the first time I checked it out too. Now it is taken over by Sun microsystems, lots of new options

i tried it too now. it's great and easy to use (much easier than vmware). the only problem is the lack of 3d acceleration. is there any virtualization software that is usable for 3d stuff?
