Hello everyone,

I'm now calling this project finished, as most, if not all of the bigs have been fixed. It's been an awesome ride, I hope you've enjoyed following the progress. It's certainly been a learning experience. In hindsight, there are a lot of things I could have done (Blender Materials, Dynamic lighting etc...) but going back now would be pretty darned hard. So here you go. 4X4. It's now available in it's final form as an .exe installer, if anyone can help with Linux and Mac installers I'd be really grateful.

Special thanks go to Eradicor (who deosn't seem to be on here at the moment) for the Jeep, texture and support, and all you guys for your tips and suggestions (and compliments!)

So here you go. Enjoy!

Also, make sure to check out the game's website!

Preview trailer for v1.5

Hello everyone,

Well, over four months of hard work has finally come to a close. It's been hard at times, fun at others, and sometimes it has been downright boring. But finally, my first game is done. I'm very proud to announce that 4X4 is now available for download!

At the moment (I know people will grumble...) there is only an .exe version of the game ready for download. I'll be uploading the blend either tonight or tomorrow afternoon, so sorry all you mac and linux users! But you'll have to wait a little while longer.

The file is a .zip, and it's about 80MB, so yes it is a huge download and I apologise for that. But the game does contain at least 14 1024x768 textures, and the results, as I hope you'll agree, are worth it.

===================== VERSIONS =========================
Current version is V1.5.

.EXE version only
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?drivgeksdml

================================================== =====
The game's official web page is at 4x4.duskydolphin.co.uk

I packed everything up, but please remember this is my first game so some things may not work properly... hopefully that's not the case, as it has been tested a lot.

So enough of the bablling. Go play! And have fun. Remember, if you find a bug, please report it via my email or my website (www.duskydolphin.co.uk)

Thanks to everyone who has made this game possible!

Alex

Looks really cool. I didn't download it, because of the size... I'll download it when I have the time.
The screenshots look really good! Keep it up!

Wonderful! It is great to see that you have finally completed it!
I am downloading it right now but it should not take long, i will report back when i played a little

I played the game now.
I would say that this is one of the best looking completed games using the BGE.
The texturing is really nice and the menu system looks very professional.
The game shows an overall very professional atmosphere, the little soundtrack going around adds a lot to it, did you play that yourself? There are a couple of flaws which hindered my progress in the game.
The steering is way too sharp and the car flies around like it was made out of cardboard.
Due to the steering issue i could not get past the first level.

I suggest that you do not call this project finished just yet, but an open beta that people can test.

Good job completeing your game. Just the fact that you stuck with your idea to the end and got it all working well, is impressive. The car physics are awsome, the tracks are simple but fun. My only issue with the game was the camera, I couldn't see what was comming on corners, but thats slow parents fault. Some more scripted events would have also been cool, but thats just wishfull thinking. Thanks for sticking to your goals, and good luck with your next project.

-Gomer

p.s. I had more trouble with the second level than the last one.

Thankyou all very much for your comments!

@ B3D00, thanks my friend! I hope you enjoy it!

@ Juggler, yes I agree. The steering is very sharp, I've brought it down a notch. It's much more managable now . Also, the jeep was a little lightweight, I've given it a touch more mass and it doesn't fly as much now, but it's still 'chirpy' and fun to drive, not like a slow boring truck or something. Thankyou for all the compliments too, I'm honoured that you'd think that (and obviously very happy!). Thanks!

@J09, yes, sorry my friend, no .blend at the moment. But there will be one soon! I'll be uploading an updated v1.1 of the game in .exe format first though, with a few minor (and major) fixes, such as the steering. Thanks!

@ Gomer, Thankyou mate, all the best of luck for your game too. I know the camera really annoyed me, but there doesn't seem to be another way. If it would try and stay behind the car more that would be awesome. Maybe that could be an update for 2.50... I know, I'd like some more events too, but I ran out of ideas! Doesn't mean to say there won't be any in an update, though...

@ Anicator, I know mate! They can be annoying, but there is a way, with some careful driving Stay in the middle, don't go up the sides.

@ Everyone, as Juggler said, this is a public beta, NOT the absolute finished game. But it's close enough! If you give me feedback I can improve the game even more, so get playin'!

detailed and fun, BUT HARD! I can't get past the snow level, never enough time. I thikn:

.1 you should add more camera views, like 1(default) 2 (futher away) 3 (hood)
.2 if you dont want more camera views, move the camera futher away its hard to see

but its good!

Thanks JESUSFRK14! V1.1 is uploading as I speak.

I agree that the camera is annoying, but I really don't want to go into the whole 'switching cameras' thing. Belive me, I've tried it. It's so bumpy it's hard enough to see what's road and what isn't But I'll add your idea about moving the camera further away to my log, and get it into v1.2

Downloading it now tb1alexc

....

Wow, huge improvement from the last version!
It is exactly like you said; with more managable steering and more weight
but it still has that little funky bounciness in it !
I really enjoyed it.
One thing came to my mind: if you want, you could add some sounds coming from the car itself.
Just a low brumming sound from the engine that maybe take amplifies a little when you push the gas.
Maybe some ambient sounds aswell? Like little splashy sounds when youre plowing through the snow on level 2 or a very little skidding sounds when you turn sharply.
The sounds shouldn't be too loud, just subtle.
I like the atmosphere when the music kind of is the main sound but it could use some if these others sounds i have you ability, time or just in the mood to implement it.

Jesusfrk14 is right! something is wrong in the last stage's timer... (I managed to get negative time XD)

Note: the camera's angle is too high (it shows the floor near the car but not in front of it), it's hard too look forward , at least on teh snow and desert stage.

The driving fell way better by the way :P

Really nice!

The game looks great. The 4x4 handles like a 4x4. The menu looks professional. You've done a great job with this.

2 suggestions. A practice mode. (I like to drive around and look at things.) And the camera. At times it's hard to see where to go. It seems as if the camera is tracking (looking at) the 4x4. Try parenting an empty to the 4x4, place it above/in front of the 4X4 and have the camera track that. That might make it easier to see where to go.
