Hello everyone!
A couple of weeks ago I finished a music video for the song Hopelessly In Love by the band Guana. This was my first big project and I did the directing, filming and post production by myself in my spare time. I used Blender, Premiere Pro and After Effects in post. Unfortunate my workcomputer has crashed so I couldn't finish my breakdown video, but as it may take some time to repair it, I thought I put up the final video at least. Here are the links: Youtube (Press "watch in high quality") | Vimeo Sorry that I couldn't find a place to upload a better quality version. Crits are welcome. /Peddie Last edited by peddie; 01-Aug-08 at 21:23. |

Hmm.. I wonder if there's a bug in Vimeo. You have set the video as private so no one here can see it. I had the same thing just couple days ago. It was private although I really don't remeber setting it as private.
Will go watch the youtube version instead.... edit: Ok, watched it and in short, I liked it a lot. In not so short, It was close that the fuzzy/shaking effects were too much, but they weren't (usually they are in today's music clips.. for me at least). Really couldn't find anything "too basic".. well maybe the endings burn effect was a bit too straight from AE's effects.. but that's my only small crit. The sync was perfect and I liked the tones.Which parts were by Blender by the way? Last edited by hhoffren; 02-Aug-08 at 00:15. Reason: typostypos and comment after watching the video |

Not too bad. I like the style, but you really over did the post-pro.
The flickering is almost nauseating to watch. I could only watch 2 minutes of this before it got too much. It's kinda like watching an old VCR tape that needs it's heads cleaned. You just can't watch anything on it because it gets annoying. But the overall quality and blender background was excellent (music wasn't too bad either). I really liked the colour overlay you put over the original film too. So really good effort, but could you possibly repost it without all the jumps and flickering??

Hello again!
First of all I would like to thank you for very good constructive criticism. hhoffren: Glad you liked it. Blender was mainly used for the back and side wall. redbyte: I am aware of that the post-pro is a little overdone, especially with the shake and flickering, but in my opinion I think it goes well along with the music. I think It's all about taste. Thanks again. /Peddie |

Hey!
I'm a little sad that I only got two comments on the video. This project has taken a lot of my time and I was hoping to get a lot of comments in return so that my next project can be even better. I think its worth it. Thanks /Peddie |

What did you use for greenscreening? Did you do that in blender or in after effects. I ask, because your matte is quite good, however there is some noticable green spill on the edges of guys. I dont know how good blenders matte tools are, but in After Effects there is this plugin (which I of course have forgotten the name of). Which is really amazing, because it more or less automatically color corrects the edges of your matte.

Hey ChojinDSL. I used after effects and the plugin keylight for the greenscreen. I know that it's not perfect, but as I said before this was my first big project and I have never worked with greenscreens before. I also notice the spill in some angles, but I think I got rid of pretty much. Some angles are almost spill free.
My main problem with the greenscreen was that the drums reflected the green and was also keyed out. I then had to rotoscope the drums for the entire video. /Peddie |

I liked the idea behind it - especially the scenes with the cable. However, the video seemed a little unsettled to me. But for your first big job this is definitely good work

well for a one man project, it's impressive. Good job.
Altho, I have to say I agree with the above critics about the post-pro. It does 'fit' the music style...but you overdid it. Even if it looks good, the flikering and 'film' sliding from right to left was too much and didn't really follow the pace of the music anyway. It's really well done overall, but next time, try to tone down the effects and emphasis them in 'special occasion' during the song, instead of having them from start to finish. |

Well for a one man job you did not such a bad job. Personally the camera work could have been better in my opinion. Different angles and sometimes the position of the band members in the frames could have added to your presentation. Personally I didn't think too much of the song itself, but your work was pretty good.
I think the post pro was also a bit over done, especially the flickering it sort of gave me a headache, though I watched it till the end. Same question as above where was blender actually used? As nearly everything there could have been done in AEF's alone. Look forward to your next project, always learn from your experiences. P.s. I commented on the Blendernation thread before coming here and I think I may have come off a little harsh, no harm intended dude. Good luck with your next project. |

Hi,
I liked it overall. I think it has a well-conceived look, which you executed very well. I agree that some of the effects were over-done, but on a one-man project, I think that could easily come about because of your focus on achieving the look. It might be worth you reviewing the project in a few months, when it's not so fresh in your mind, to see what strikes you at that stage and what things you might change. I was wondering; what kind of camera did you use? Some of the shots have some quite shallow DOF. Was there a 35mm adapter involved, or were those direct from the camera? Jonathan Merritt. |

Very good, i dont think the amount of post pro is too much, its that it stays pretty much consistantly the same all the way through, it needed a littel mroe variation, maybe a few moments where the shakey effect dies down, and a few separate moments where the flickering dies down.
It would mix up the style a little more and make it easier to watch. |

I know I'm reopening an old thread, but I'm curious how blender was used in this video. Was it the cubist pinpression effect that was keyed in behind the band?
-Thanks |
