ok, i solved the inline problem. it only occures with MSVC. to circumvent the error you only need to remove the word inline from that line.

@broken:
it seems to be still a problem if solid objects (and camera) are within the volume space. is it a limitation of the algorithm or is there a chance of fixing this in the future?

Would you be able to post the .blend file for that? It should be fix-able.

cheers

Broken: have you commited Farsthary's code for full shadow support including self shadows in Volumetrics yet? Because that's may be one of the remaining things needed for volumetrics to be about fully featured? Should we expect that anytime soon?

No, because it's not fully functional and as far as I can see I don't think it's implemented the right way. I've had a brief look at it but need to do some more testing.

At the least I think Farsthary would really learn from you on better and good ways of implementing certain features and the coding standards seen in the Blender source code.

So have you told Farsthary in detail on how the implementation could be made a bit better and more correct? I think you make a good teacher for Farsthary and I would think he's learned a lot about implementation of certain features and Blender code standards.

CD: Calm down - the development of this feature (and the rest of Blender) is in good hands. It will get there when it gets there ...

This is nice! Importing datasets is really a great feature for Blender, with many uses. Again i'm speechless about this development.

farsthary, what type of dataset can you use now? What types will be implemented in the future?

I noticed a couple of people here have offered & started to help out with documentation (not to mention the PDF being worked on over at Raul's blog). So as not to duplicate those efforts, I'll focus on some tutorials/demo files.

After some experimentation with particle setups & volumetric materials, I've got two practical examples started - a campfire & a nuclear explosion. They're a bit rough (the campfire smoke esp. needs work) but I'll polish them up & try to do a few others, like clouds, a tornado, etc.

For those helping with the wiki, I've uploaded the material I collected together from the earlier stages of development, in case it can be useful. It's some trimmed text and various example images from Matt's blog, commit logs & forum posts: http://www.savefile.com/files/2009314

I'll keep everyone posted on my progress ...

@Cire: nice stuff! Shows the potential of the new volumetrics nicely. Tutorials are ALWAYS welcome (by me, anyway).

Now I'm visualizing a campfire getting nuked.. need more coffee..

I wonder if Farsthary will have a weekend surprise for us, his last surprise was the auto-resolution thing. But I wonder what with the speed he works he'll have for us perhaps in less than a week or tomorrow even.

Just wondering.

Hi. I am having some trouble with the Sim_physics branch. It seems that a color's position on the colorband is what effects the density of the material, and not the alpha value of the color.

(Sorry image won't display in this blog click the link.)
here I have made 2 test renders. They both have the same material setting but the one on the left is set to Volume and the one on the right is set to solid. The texture is set to be mapped to the objects density or alpha value. Not sure but I think that this may only happen with scons+mingw builds.

I'm doing some testing, and I don't understand something. I have a cloud which uses the pointdensity texture from a particlesystem of another object. Everything works ok.
However, if I want to use lights with multiple scattering, it doesn't seem to work. I guess I should first really understand what multiple and single scattering do. Seems that single scattering is basic shadows while multiple is like AO.

Here is the blend file, and the question was, "why doesn't the light affect the cloud when I use the multiple or single+multiple scattering?".

Jeez.....are you even aware of how pathetic and desperate you are making yourself look?

I would kind of understand if you were on the cutting edge of Blender, and needed these updates for some commercial work, but you don't. You're still a long way from mastering the very basics, yet you're baying and bleating the loudest for new features.

I'm going to repeat what you've already been told before: STOP hounding the developers, they are doing this when they can, and they are not accountable to you, me, or anyone else for that matter. (except maybe Ton)

I agree. In CD's recent post about the particle system development, Jahka himself came on and apologised! I think it's a disgrace that any of the developers/coders should feel that kind of pressure after giving so much to Blender for so little.

wow...just wow M@dcow.

Regardless of CDs past posts I dont see how anything in his post could be construed as hounding a dev. He wasnt crackin an e-whip over Fars head yelling "get it done, come on you slow lil piece of pud lint!"

Instead he was just kinda sittin there wistfully wondering what Far would release next.

Chill man, seriously.

EDIT: And wow at the rest of you people. Where was CD hounding anyone??? Get a grip folks.

Do you actually read what he writes?

No, he doesn't crack an e-whip, he just nags, constantly. He also has a habit of 'advising' developers on what they need to be doing. I don't know about you, but if I was a Dev getting advice from someone who can't actually code, I'd be a wee bit miffed.

M@dcow, you're totally right. It's really hard not to throw CD a big Christian Bale.
