Hi there,

Sometimes i'm working on this issue, how to model, texture and render a hologram ?
I already find an solution, that i like but i think it could be better

So,

I will give you a .blend, a texture, and screenshots (the animation will be on vimeo, on the Blender channel probably this week-end).

1) the scene:
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/man-scene.png

2) uv:
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/man-uv.png

3) alpha ipo:
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/man-alpha.png

4) compositing:
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/man-comp.png

5) render (composited):
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram...ender-comp.png

It is better when it's animated (the alpha is better)

6) render (non-composited):
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/man-render.png

7) the texture:
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/hologramme-col.tga

8) .blend:
http://clems.g.free.fr//tmp/hologram/man-holo.blend

Hoping i'll like it or helps

BCNU for the animation, and probably timelapse...

Would this work if you took a real human and surrounded him with greenscreen, replaced with black in GIMP? Or Blender I mean, or Pinnacle for Black? Then run this effect? I will run tests soon.

blenderman345: Sadly, it wouldn't. When the camera looks at the model from an angle, the "stripes" don't go straight across, they "bend" according to the 3d shape. You can't get that information out of a picture....

that's pretty good but sure you could get the stipes not to bend (me thinks). Get the alpha map via compositing, then composite the stripes over it...wait...But then that would sillohuete...well, i bet there is a way....hmmm

I'll describe how to do it soon

(I would upload the blend but it's too big what would be the best place to upload to?)

Thanks for comment

Actually I'm currently writing a tutorial, the effect became better. I added a heat effect under the man's feet and modified the lighting.

You can get a preview here:

http://clems.g.free.fr/tmp/holo.jpg

(the .blend is this version of the effect, but on the tutorial I will modify some things, probably the texturing...)

So, the .blend that you downloaded is not the final version.

I tried to download the mpegs from your website - but I don't know what codec to use to view them.

Could you help me out?

Many thanks,

Hi there

I have finished this test, can't make better than this last video:

http://www.vimeo.com/1881167

But if anybody can, don't hesitate !

For this new version, i have modified the lighting and the compositing and added a heat effect over the man's feet.

here is the new compositing:

It occurred to me that you could probably use this technique on deforming meshes by mapping the holo-texture using the object coordinates of an empty instead of using 'project from view'. Just a thought.

BTW I intend to try this out soon! Cool effect.

An odd thing, however, all I get when I render with Composite turned on is a blank screen. Did anyone else expereince this output failure? All I changed was the output to a PNG sequence with RGBA. It renders fine in the window, but all I get is a black image when I try to view the frame.

This might be because you have anti-aliasing turned on for your graphics card. Once the render is done, hit the 'A' key twice to toggle to alpha view and back - that should make the render show up.

Nope LOTRJ,

This BLEND file and node solution produces no output on Windows XP SP3 running Blender 2.48a. Yes, I can see the image in the Render window, but when I press F3 to save as PNG I get an empty file. Also if I just render the animation, I get all empty files.

How are you guys getting these pictures? Are you screen grabbing them?

Ah!
Because it is open EXR based, saving as PNG does not work. I saved as EXR and Photshop could see the image.
I still can't get an alpha out of this setup.

Ah Ha!
It is the Lens Distortion node on Windows. It fails to produce output. I removed the lens distortion node from the layout and I could save as PNG with an alpha.

Oh guys! I've just seen this .blend is really old !

Many things have changed since I have shared this one (just watch the first and last render).

I'm not woeking on 2.48a, but I think it work well.

@Atom, did you try to change "FFMPEG" to "PNG" (or an other extension) ?

weilynn,

Yes I changed the render output type to PNG. As I mentioned above, the problem is in the lens distortion node, it does not work on Windows XP SP3 using Blender 2.48a.

I love this effect though, the lens distortion does not add much anyway so I am happy that I got a version of the effect working. I can also add the lens distortion in After Effects later if I really need it.
