Hi everybody!

I'd like to show you a video I made for a contest that was an opportunity to combine two topics that are close to my heart: Linux and Blender. The subject was “What do you do with Linux?”

Here are some screenshots:

Although I usually work with commercial apps (even though I am a Linux user) the timelapses I've seen always made made me want to try Blender, despite it's notorious interface. So what better occasion than a project with a short deadline, right ? Blender more than surpassed my expectations, the integration with the compositor is a real timesaver. Of course there is a lot I would do different had I had the time but still, I am amazed at what I could accomplish with what little time I had AND considering I had to learn Blender itself as well, which turned out not to be difficult at all.

You can view the video in HD at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6wVDs5ZTOQ&fmt=22
I would be very glad if you took the time to support me. If you'd like to vote for the video you can do so at http://howdoyoulinux.com/#watchvideos ,the video is called "Animate!"

There will be a second round where only the three best entries take part. So if the video makes it into this second round I will update this thread and maybe you can vote for the video once more. If it takes the grand price I will donate a healthy chunk to the Blender Foundation and/or other blender projects, because I expect great things from Blender in the future.

Needless to say I am also interested in feedback, while I would be happy to see the animation win above all I want to get this seen.

Cheers,
George

The animation was simply stunning work, you really showed Blender's true potential. You could do professional quality commercials.

I hope you win! I am definitely voting for you. Kudos, and Good Luck!!!

Great animation, although I'm not sure if I like the 3D text font that much.

It is split up in about 6 different scenes and cut together. At first I was struggling a bit with Blenders concept of scenes but then grew to really appreciate them. I am not too fond of the font (heh, pun) either, I'm not really a typography guy. I would have preferred to do the type in Aftereffects but I wanted to stay in Linuxland for this one, for obvious reasons. Sadly I haven't found something comparable to what Aftereffects offers yet, I can't wait to get rid of it tough.

Cheers,
George

Ok, an update: My video entered the final round together with two other entries ! As I am really seeing a benefit in using Blender for my work, I would be more than happy to donate 1000$ to Blender development (BMesh for example) if the video wins. So please go to http://howdoyoulinux.com/#watchvideos and cast a vote for Blender!

Yup, "Animate!" is the right one, thanks! They recently added a captcha because of scripted voting.

Lol the last screen made me laugh a bit.. the part where it says: Made with Blender on (picture of a penguin) so the first thing just popped into my head "How can you make something on a penguin..." then I remembered the Linux logo :P
It looks good tho.

Cheers!
