I've been working on a tool for converting Blender designs to Flash 10 in such a way that image textures within the design can be easily replaced in real time without re-rendering. It doesn't work on every kind of design, but enough to make it useful for various web applications. If you are interested and have Flash 10 installed, there are examples at http://live.makesweet.com (and you can try making your own if you have a Google a/c). Caveat: if you don't need to change image textures after render time, this is NOT the tool for you - there are lots of other ways of generating such swf files.
Here's a snapshot of a Flash 10 widget for previewing back tattoos (based on a makehuman model). The blue box can be replaced online with a photo or text, moved around by clicking and dragging, scaled, and rotated. ![]() And here's a snapshot of an "ornament generator", same deal. You can imagine that there's a lot of variations on this theme possible ![]() ![]() There's a write-up of an earlier incarnation of this work (called "makesweet") in Blender Art Magazine #21. I'd love to get feedback from other Blender users on whether they see some use for this tool. |

That's a pretty cool online tool. You could make funny and personal (Christmas) cards with it. $$$?!

It's all about personalization. Even though the custom M&M's carries a hefty price tag, I could see that being used in on-line stores that offer customization. When I ordered the t-shirts for siggraph, a few of the sites had that where you upload your logo file and then could place it around. It's a very cool idea to let the customer see exactly what they would be getting (especially with the tatoo idea).

It is interesting to see an age of mass-production cycling around to personalization again, now that we have the tools (e.g. shapeways). Like Homer Simpson said about drink, technology may be the cause of and solution to all of life's problems
![]() Definitely, generators like this are useful for sites selling custom products (tshirts, cups, etc). But they can already afford to pay programmers to make generators for them. What is new is that now artists could make and use generators; you don't need any special programming skills or servers to create or use a generator. Are there any new applications this opens up? An interactive portfolio? Customized artwork? Let potential customers explore how pictures would look hanging on a wall? Fill-in-the-blank cartoon contests? |

I think that if you adjust the website and make it possible for people to send the images to friends as a e-card and you add some ads on the page you can make some bucks. Last time I made an e-card the free websites had some cheap things and nothing looking great.

Thanks for the e-card suggestion, Dune2k, I'll give that a shot!
