I have no affiliation with Unity (the game development suite), but saw in develop daily that it's now got a new licence scheme...
haven't had time to check it out myself yet but I've always been intrigued by it. apparently it has strong blender support with drag and drop loading of .blends http://unity3d.com/#freeunity will download soon, but it's not on linux so not till I'm back home! |

I have never heard of Unity before. I will definitely be checking this out, being free with blender support and all. Also, web publishing looks interesting.
Thanks for the info

Blender and Unity are truly best friends, an amazing duo for indie 3D game artists.
I tried out the asset importing a year ago or so ... drag and drop could not have been easier. I only wish that there was some way to program logic without having to actually program ... |

Unity was also very positively refered to several times during Blender Conference 2009.

I've used Unity for game development in the past.
Unity is really awesome software for game development. Very easy to use, yet very flexible at the same time. Additionally it works seamlessly with Blender, so that you can edit models, animations and UVs in Blender and see the results instantly inside the Unity engine. The ability to output for Mac, PC, web and iPhone makes it very easy to deploy everywhere with no headaches.

Win! Have people tried the in browser stuff? That on its own is pretty cool. Plus all the above mentioned benefits.

Don't forget about Shiva ( www.stonetrip.com ), 1.8 was just released and has a lower price point now.
I've used both, and both are very useful ( and do iPhone, but at a cost - note that Erwin's GameKit - mentioned in the Game Development section - will allow you to take a suitably crafted Blender GE game and deploy it on the iPhone ). If you need Linux deployment, then Shiva will publish to it.

Shiva's editor is windows only , unity's editor is for macos as well but unlike Shiva it cant publish for linux. Unity on the other hand can publish for iphone. I gave unity a try and it really show that this application started from MACOS , it has apple's gui philosophy written all over it. Pretty much what I mean by "proper GUI".

www.foopets.com has a game that uses the unity engine. I wonder if any of the pets were made in Blender?

Wow, I was just planning to buy a license too. The Unity editor is great, imo. I tested it with Blender and it was nice to see instant updates between the two. I've never really seen anything work so seamlessly with Blender, in terms of game development.

This is incredible! I did'nt know you get programs like these!
Both Shiva and Unity looks quite promising. Unity has a quite a few limitations like real-time shadows (first thing I noticed). And the pro version is waaaay too expensive. Dunno, maybe I'm just full of crap. Shiva has a really cheap standard version that has most of the features. It seems like the more technical very in-depth stuff is taken up by the pro version. I'm going to download both (Unity and Shiva) over the weekend and see how they compare. Thanks!! |

There's the free version and the pro version. It's great that the free version is, well, free and has many features, but unfortunately it comes with several restrictions including the forced Unity splash screen/watermark, no realtime shadows, no ability to render to textures (so no in-game security cameras), no post-processing effects, etc. BUT, I will say it's good for the little indie gamer and hobbyist in all of us who want to tool around with something nifty. |

Unity is great. Yesterday I was invited to attend the Unity Unite conference here in San Francisco, and met up with the Unity team and some of the enthusiastic community members. Their tools are impressive, and I'm happy to see there is a free version now. Pity it uses PhysX instead of Bullet ;-)
Check out the http://BLURS.com website, all made using Unity (led by Matthew Wegner of http://fun-motion.com fame) The Blender GUI designers/developers could learn a bit or two about user-friendly on Unity, so please go ahead and try it out ;-) ! Cheers, Erwin |
