Found this at CG_Talk. Looks like an interesting sculpting app.

http://drpetter.se/project_sculpt.html

The localised adaptive subdivision sculpting is cool.

Thanks for the tip, I was going to try it out. My Stinger scanner did not detect any virus at all.

Wow! It doesn't feel very comfortable to me, but I love the basic idea.

Wouldn't such a tool be more useful when integrated into Blender? It reminds me of my older blenderstorm proposal - subdivide brush for sculpt mode.

Btw. it works under Wine fluently (only crashes on keystrokes sometimes).

According to gamedev.net this guy made this program because he didn't really like how Blender's sculpt tools worked.

Apparently instead of offering patches for the Blender dev. team then, he decided to ditch Blender and make his own program.

Sometimes offering something to the team is not accepted. You yourself (CD) just commented on the poor guy who made the improved color bands and basically claimed because Brecht had another vision, Charlie's work would go un approved and not integrated into Blender. One thing Blender certainly needs is an improved gradient, it should work like After Effects.

seems like Zbrush version .051 beta, most of the keys are the same. Wonder if he is a zbrush fan.

I said I wasn't sure if it was going to be approved or not, the operative words suggest I didn't say it would not be approved.

Also, I did mention the planned shading refactor which was actually discussed among the core development team.

I did not diss him or put him down, I just told him what was being talked about, I actually liked what he was doing.

In fact, we are all got behind with the advanced technology, and use the simple and crude device.
Please search "SensAble PHANTOM Haptic Device". It's really "voxel" based.
Now, we only have a computer and some simple devices like tablet... so we only can use "topology" based fashion.

Tried it. Like it.
Feels "good" to use, smooth, fast, easy. I´ll keep an eye on it.

No Virus, according to my scanners anyways.

And in Blender, offered to Blender, not in Blender... who cares.
Why do you guys always want everything IN Blender. You want it like Autodesk? Buying and locusting around other tools and integrating them until its only one tool left?

And bluntly without fooling yourselfes, most here don´t even use or even know how to use more than 30% of Blender (no offense, just stating facts) and always want more stuff integrated into Blender.
Just be grateful for the efford that is put into current Blender features and expanding them, instead of wanting it to be like zbrush, cubase, combustion, after effects, xsi, modo, photoshop and premiere at once.
I rather have a borad varity of tools to choose from, even if 10 of them serve the same purpose, each one got advantages and disadvantages and in regard to the current project I can choose the ones that fit the purpose best, I can handle best or learn fastest.

Hi,

@critch : I confirm a potential security problem.

I sent an email to Tomas Pettersson, the author of Sculptris, because I have encountered a problem when attempting to launch the Sculptris.exe file : my antivirus (Bit Defender Internet Security) has displayed a warning : Malicious or infected file.

So, I have pushed the STOP button, and I have not tried the software.

Nothing is detected when scanning the file. It is found only when trying to execute it :

The message comes from the behaviour analysis, and is due to an operation considered as abnormal and dangerous by the security system.

I asked Tomas Pettersson if Sculptris software attempts to connect to Internet or install a cookie or something similar :

There's no internet activity or any other system interaction besides writing config.txt and a few other files in the app dir

I'm now in touch with the author and I'll tell you more if I have further informations.

@critch : What antivirus software are you using on your system ?

Philippe.

Hi everybody,

Check this page, the alpha 3 is available.

Some new features :

Quote:
Notable changes:
- Tablet pressure support
- Alternative brush control menu (press Alt)
- Improved flatten and pinch tools
- Some bugfixes (should not crash quite as much)
- It's a little bit faster

Less notable but still interesting:
- Press L to set light direction in shaderless mode
- Press K to enable/update sculpt bumpmap (taron!) - Shift+K to disable again
- Improved material mapping, should render horizon/rim properly
- Pretty background gradient/texture (you can edit this)

Check documentation.txt for more information. Some controls have changed to make tablet control more convenient.

I've fixed a specific crash bug that should make it easier to export OBJ meshes, but unfortunately it's a bit of a workaround and the bad geometry still happens. There's also a slightly different but similar bug that will still cause it to crash (seems like this will happen when you get small holes at the symmetry line).
By the way, I didn't find any virus too. It's clean.

! alpha 3 rocks! dynamic tessellation is soo darn cool/efficient IMO

some of the gallery work is starting to show the power of the app in its infancy:

Has anyone tried to import an OBJ from Blender into Sculptris?
It crashes on me.

Exporting from 2.49 or 2.5?

with 2.5 ---> convert your model to tri's first, ctrl-T,
and all normals are outside, ctrl-N or shift-ctrl-N, in the N panel display face normals- outside is not always outside !!
then ensure your model is in object mode(not edit model) then export to obj, works for me with 2.51apha.

exporting while in edit mode result in half the faces in wrong direction,
not converting to tri's first result in half the faces in wrong direction.

once in Scultri a bit of smoothing should fix and wayward verts,
#symmetry may be off, and strength values could be way.
try low poly models first, could be issues with high poly models??
