Here an quick test with the new displacement mapping that was added today to the CVS, fantastic work coders
I subdivded a plane, added a material with a cloud texture and mapped it to the displacement then animated the offset and this is what i got.

What can I say, displacement mapping totally rocks.

It takes a lot of lives, just to break the cycle.
It takes a lot of hate, and takes a lot of luck

After watching the little clip I experimented a bit and found that it also works with subsurfed meshes (the higher you set the rendering subsurf value the more detail you get). Once this works with UV mapping and we have a knife tool that cuts and retains the subsurfed shape modeling viens, wrinkles etc. will be a snap.

Thanks to kino for his bf-blender builds

Is anyone else experiencing this?: When you displace a mesh, the results are not visible, in the 3D window, but only in the render?

Thats the whole point its blenders procedural cloud texture, and it can be animated in the offsets

Its a rendering process so it won't be visable in until its rendered

The whole point of it is to allow you to add extra detail at render time, without that detail slowing down the interactive view, or adding thousands of polys. It's basically like a bump map, but it actually moves the pixels rather than faking their shading.

I think that's the idea that they were aiming for, Material based displacement.
