SSS, Caustics, Jahka particles, GSoC, Toronto design projects.

The rate of new/upcoming big upgrades is getting insane

Seriously, this totally caught me off guard.

Heck someone post this in the news section at CGtalk, there's many people there who are now impressed with recent Blender developements and this and the SSS should turn them on their heads

@ Gwentiv : the patch is a piece of code, so unless you know how to compile programs it isn't very useful ... interesting to look at if you know how to program - you can just open it with windows notepad but it is more helpful to use a program like Notepad ++ with syntax highlighting .

Wow the SSS thing and now this ... I guess I won't be investing my money on a "professional" renderer after all

Hey that's looking pretty cool! Not that realistic, but may be enough for some circumstances. I think the main problem though is the amount of light getting through, it's far too bright and flat. When you look at caustics, it's usually just a shadow, with small lines or patterns of light in that shadow. It's not wide, smooth, flatly lit areas, as in some of these images.

For example in the drinking glass image, the space behind the glasses that should be in shadow is actually brightened when it should be darkened! The area behind the glasses should most definitely NOT be brighter than the area in front, since the light has had to pass through layers of glass already! I don't know the setup of that file, and whether shadows are on or not, but it looks quite weird.

I did some quick levels adjustments in photoshop for that shadow area to more like what I think it should look like, check the attachment. There is the same problem in many of those other images, particularly the bouncing sphere animation - it looks like it has a bright red shadow, when it should really have a dark shadow and a few streaks of light inside (and outside!). Maybe you could get a good improvement by just using some weighting function to increase contrast in the caustic patterns so you just get the brightest bits.

There's also a nice reference image of caustics from a drinking glass on wikipedia here. But yes, this looks like it could turn out to be quite interesting

5Onlt, nope , that's why is a simulation, I use an approximation method.

broken, totally agree, but that was done with one of my earlier test bin so now is a lot but a lot more correct

Is there a build for windows?

Right now I'm on a windows machine with no cvs build structure setup.

I wouldn't call this general public news yet while it's still very much in the development stages. But it's great news to Blenderheads.
