I revisited an earlier character project of mine, which some of you might remember, and resculpted the entire model (which original had particle hair) expressly for the purpose of this, my first internal renderer SSS test:

The goal here was to create a glazed porcelain type of finish of the Bard and to familiarize myself with the new SSS feature.

SSS settings are:

Radius R: 15
Radius G: 4.7
Radius B: 2.55

R: .985
G: .940
B: .827

IOR: 1.2

Col: .330
Tex: 0

Scale: .3

Error: .05

Other material settings:

RayMir: 1.7
Fresnel: 1.1

Lambert + Blinn shader used

Render nodes include:

DOF (fStop: 21; 100 samples)

a brightness/contrast node (new in CVS)

Overlay + HSV node to enhance colors

Model consists of just over 400k verts. Total project time was able seven hours with much of that performing test renders and experimenting with SSS settings.

Not a perfect result, but somewhat promising I think =)

Thanks for looking!

It does look good, but i think it could benefit from stronger lighting to make the shadows less harsh. maybe a spotlight with softshadows and 1.7-2.5 light intensity place behind the model, and a smaller, dimmer light placed to the left of the camera would make it look complete....just my opinion

Looks too much like the Photoshop 'plastic wrap' filter to me. Sorry.

Felix_Kütt: Thanks! If you haven't tried already, http://www.graphicall.org has some recent test builds for different platforms. I hope you get to try it soon. SSS is fun stuff!

Daniel8488: Thank you! I'm using a classic three-point lighting setup here with AO cranked up some. I did like the contrast it brought out in the edges, and it's definitely something I'll continue to play with to see how far I can push it. Lighting is, as always, integral in the situation and requires great attention.

Lord of the Rings Junkie: Haha, yes, that is one nasty filter =P

Actually, I do have some holiday ornaments with this kind of finish on them. Very reflective things =)

I do like the sense there's almost a hint of HDRI to this particular render, when in reality there's a little cloud nor at work on top of the sculpted details to help catch some light and make for more interesting surface features.

More tests to come...

To be truthful, it looks more like copper than porcelain, but it looks great anyway.

That looks cool.... Don't know if it looks like porcelain (I have very little experience with that material), but it reminds me of that glazed, porcelain-like high-prized chocolate.

Damn.... now my sweet-tooth is starting up
