I just read from a poster in another 3d forum where he says:

"Just received this month's issue of 3D World where they have the results of this years Roncarelli report on the top 3D Apps. trueSpace (no particular number) comes in at number 4 just behind 3DS Max, but number one is Blender (a free app) and number 2 is Adobe Flash?!?

[SIZE=-1]The Roncarelli Report details, discusses and analyses the many significant changes that occurs in the computer animation industry.
It is not 3D specific as far as I know... Great to see Blender picking some momentum here, as it is regarded as a reference document by many professionnals.

Interesting. I do wonder if price was a factor or not because packages like Maya are hella expensive.

Apparently it is based off of the number of "sales".

Well, AFAIK the Roncarelli Report is an analysis of the important changes that happened in the computer animation industry. The head author, Robi Roncarelli has been at it for some 22 years already. He's also the head of Pixel magazien. They are serious people and have better to do than counting 'sales' ; how would they anyway with the free version of everything and pirated versions of everything that are going around.

I tried to figure the list out, but I can't make heads or tails why Blender is #1. It isn't the size of the executable, nor the price, or feature list etc....

I'm a blenderhead, but if you'd ask me for my honest opinion, I'll put Blender anywhere between #7 an #13

Yea I have to agree with you there. It is free and a powerful tool but I have heard about some really good things about 3DS MAX. And if Blender was better then 3DS MAX or Truespace then wouldn't they lower their prices so they wouldn't get outdone by a free program? Thats just my thought on the matter.

Interesting toontje... whydo you think it deserves between #7 an #13? It's not mature enough? lol Had to say it.

Just kidding bro, but anyway, I was just reading and maybe I am misunderstanding it here, but it seems that the reason it got first place wasn't the fact it is better, just that this year more professionals are starting to use it in there tool set, as well as the rating here are averaged as to how many licenses are added every year,so while the likes of high end commercial packages will always be in need and in circulation among the entertainment industry, blender being the high end of opensource 3d packages, makes it easy to obtain for hobbyists and small studios to use without the big overheads.

Softimage welcomes blender to the list as they believe those who start out with open source will eventually move on to high end apps, once they are ready too.
So while blender made it to the top which is great news, it did not state that blender is the best.*( though we may have our own opinion on that one)...

I use Blender alongside expensive programs in a commercial environment. The fact is blender is free, and thus to commercial companies it has "no risk" or "no cost" associated with it, therefore minimal approval process is needed to install and use it.

As long as you can get the results from it.

It is based upon the number of copy's installed and is for the most popular animation packages.
Apparently blender was downloaded 1.8 thousand million times last year.
Though apparently upgrades or educational editions of other various packages are not included in the report.

Very awesome. Nice to see Blender pop up anywhere, regardless of the context. It seems to be popping up more and more in the press and magazines and such.
