Err, it's most likely the Radeon 9800. They had a thread going about this awhile back. Check in General Forum.

Had the same problem with my ALL IN WONDER 8500. Still haven't really fixed it, but I prefer working on my labtop instead of the desktop anyways.

If you scroll through the posts on the thread, they said something about installing older drivers that won't have the problem.

If you've got a 3Ghz 512MB machine with an incompatable graphics card, you might actually get a speed increase by disabling hardware acceleration (rely on software acceleration instead).

This is just a guess by the way.

It is your ATI card, this is a known issue with Blender. ATI Technologies just donated 5 Cards to Blender.Org so the programmers can solve these problems with incompatibilty. This has been discussed on a forum here. I cant remember which one, so just do a search of ATI and mabey you can find a fix. Most likely changing to the earlier drivers of ATI for your 9800 will work. Just do a search. Good Luck. Also, you can go to Blender.Org to check out how they are tackling this problem.

Yeah going back toaround Catalyst 3.5 seems to help a lot. Unfortunately most games need the later drivers. Very frustrating situation I hope they figure this out sometime soon, I have the same card and problem. Sometimes I've found closing blender and restarting it makes it go fast for a short amount of time.

I actually have a similar problem with 2.25 so this isn't all that new of an issue. It's a bit worse in the later blender's though. I think they focused too much on making the interface look nice rather than work good.

I have that exact same card
the only thing that works for me is to use the drivers that came with the cd
and get the most recent version of windows update "drivers",
some how it works like a charm

I don't see how a graphics driver would effect the path, unless you messed up your python installation when you installed the driver (blew it away or something). Check and make sure you didn't mess up python some other way and that you're using the same blender version you were before when the python worked.

The new blender is a bit slow... but the newest is a little faster(2.33a)
Other programs can't be running or else it will try to crash on my comp.
I can't really complain about it, cuz it has some advantages like that mousewheel thingie and I don't have to switch blenders every time I want to merge polies together...

It seams that the Radeon 3d card is the problem. I use Geforce, and for so far I never heared that Geforce cards had problems rendering games. And I heard a lot of people complaining about Radeon cards. :-?

okay, so why is this posted in the game engine forum if it blender isn't slow for games?

is blender on your secondary monitor? ....

can't you just deal with it? I mean, it is annoying but I see waaaay too many of these threads

.............
I don't want to think about this ati problem junk anymore right now
okay, so you say it is the game engine

is this just this one file?
tell us what this file is like

is there stuff being printed to the console window?
fix the errors [python and logic brick] causing them

do you run windoze?
I've had problems with the ati driver in linux where more than 2 textures made the game engine unreasonably slow, I do not have the drivers installed currently

does your scene have a lot of characters with armatures?
I've notice blender print strange things when I quit a certain file which adds armature objects at runtime, also it seems to get slower and slower. (but it isn't that fast to begin with)
............................................
For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.

Hey whats up?
I ran into this same problem five minutes ago trying to install a ATI driver
from windows update
all i did to fix the problem
Uninstall that ATI driver and used the one that came with the cd
Its file version is: 6.14.10.2003
and the drivers date created: 3/31/2003 3:3

And here is a link to the exact driver that works for me (CATALYST™ 3.2)

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-...08040c-efg.exe

I don't want to mess with these drivers and stuff(I've got Ati Radeon 9200SE)
it's one of the slowest videocards I have ever had... I mean some games are slow... I always upgrade my video cards when they are 6 months old... then I sell my old one and buy a new better one that has 'pixel shaders'...
At weekends I'm always bored and have some free time so I don't mind the time that is going waste....

I can realate to this as well I have an older ATI radeon 7200 it's a great card but it slows the hell out of blender,

specs

1.33 g duran
512 mb ram
motherboard that can handle 3 g
maxter hard drive
ATI radeon 7200

let me assure you I had another card before and I find that it's not blender blender is very fast it's the way our GC's draw the UI in blender, thats the slow down... the blender foundation devs are working on this now and I think it's going to be fixed this next release..
