Heres a little something Ive been meaning to do for a while.
A simple skinned character with a simple but very functional rig to
make it possible for people wanting to get into rigging or animating
a quick start.

Have fun

(Click picture to download) Read-me in the blend.

One of the features, foot-roll on the local-axisX rotate.

---------------update---------- 16.10.04

Heres a .blend with a jump Animation with skinny to see some of the
features in motion

Skinny guy jump

A quick answer, dont do that then

Read up on Ik solvers, the feet have IK solvers so if you want to
pull the pelvis futher than the IK limit your going to have to grab them
as well.

Thanks for sharing nozzy. This rig has some clever solutions to some things I've had problems with. much appreciated!

Personaly I appreciate this alot, i've always been much more interested in animation then rigging and modeling etc... this'll be something fun to mess around with.

thank you very much for sharing this with the community nozzy.

the setup looks a lot simpler then some others i've seen in the past.

I like the movements you get, very flexible and perfect for 3d cartoon purposes.

Really cool! I played around with the guy, then downloaded the jump .blend. Good stuff! My one question is (as a newbie) what about that lingering "root"which stays behind as he walks forward at the end?

Thank you for this, it is much appreciated.

I really like the approach you have taken, and it seems to produce a very simple and powerful rig thats just ideal for animating this kind of character.

Hi paroneayea. The main root is a thing of taste it is the highest bone in the hierarchy so grabing it you can move the whole character. Like in the jump animation I key the root when he jumps, otherwise I would have to key each IK handle. Using the root like this when there are big movements cut down on and add a nice stucture to keying.

So for example if your character is riding in a car and has to jump on to the back of a lorry , you could use a constraint animation on the root to key him with he's root bone from one vehicle to the other. This kind of animation would be a real pain without a main root otherwise.

The minus is like you notice, you have a bone sitting around when your character is not doing any major movements, jumping, flying, swiming.
If it gets on your nerves go into edit mode and delete it, it shouldn't effect the character to much, you maybe have to link the knee IK handles to the pelvis.

Seems like it's just me, but I've tried going to your site both today and last Friday, but always get the message 'site not found'. I've tried entering parts and all in my browser address window without any luck.
Any suggestions?

Strange, are you using the links above, clicking the first picture and the text link? They both work for me.

Nozzy:

Thanks. I don't have much practice at all, and I must say that I am surprised by the setup, but that's very kind to share.

Thanks a lot.

Cheers.

No picture or text title actually appears for me, just a square with an 'X' in it. Rollover shows link to: http://www.thehive. . . etc, but clicking not copying that gives anything but the message 'site not found'.
If possible could you send it eihter the file as attachmnet to me at:
phampton@cca.edu
Perhaps it will work that way.
[edit] I found that the links work on my home Windows machine. Somehow my work IBook wouldn't recognize them. Could be my security preferences.

Thanks again,
Pam

Thanks SO much! I wanted the same thing, a simple, animatable "puppet", but failed in making it, but this one is so cool! And a tutorial on how to make a simple animation would be great. You know, the character-actually-advances-through-scene method, not the using-path-and-nla method. Thank you very much!!!!
