Here is something that I've been working on for awhile that I wanted to share with the community.

This is a collection or particle fur settings and halo materials. I think it does a pretty good job of demonstrating what blender's particle system is capable of.

Anyways, I hope someone is able to put this to use.

The blend file and a short Tutorial can be downloaded here: http://cs.unm.edu/~sketch/gallery/resource/furlib.html
while you're there, check out the rest of my website: http://cs.unm.edu/~sketch/gallery/

NOTE: BrianH's Fur Library
----------------------------------
My fur library does not take advantage of the new strand rendering feature. Everything in my library will still work of course, but you should also look at BrianH's compilation of strand furs:

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55746

Here is a preview of what is in BrianH's library:

While we're on the subject of particles ... has anybody figured out how to use the animated button that appears below the static button? If it's possible to animate static particles, I would be just thrilled ... but heck if I can figure it out.

Edit: Oh, forgive me, thank you so much for that blend file. I'll get alot of use out of your settings. It is very kind of you to share them with the community.

That's great. I just changed my opinion about blender's particle system. You have to contribute with one of these to the Blender manual.

Thank you

Thank you sketchy! It just so happens I was looking for something like this to create tree moss. These will come in handy in alot of instances though I am sure.

I'm glad you all like it. Those tests look pretty cute.

DYeater, I too went through much frustration trying to get animated static particles to work. What gave me the most grief was that I expected the particles to be animated in the 3d window. However, that is not the case.

Here's a quick minitut on animated static particles:

1.) Create a character. Rig it and skin it (whew... thats a big step).

2.) Duplicate (shift-d) the character's mesh. This second mesh is the character's fur.

3.) Enter edit mode on the fur mesh and delete any faces that shouldn't be covered in fur.

3.) Add a particles special effect to the fur mesh. Copy the particle settings from one of the furs in my library.

4.) In the particle effects panel, push the animate button. When this button is pushed, particles will be recalculated for each frame during rendering.

5.) Slap on one of my halo textures, or create your own.

6.) Animate away! You won't be able to see the fur moving in your 3d window. However, if you need to see what the fur will look like in a certain frame, push the RecalcAll button in the particle effects tab.

Here is a demo file, a furry hotdog: http://cs.unm.edu/~sketch/gallery/re...ryhotdog.blend

Sunbeam, I'm flattered, but be careful. My girlfriend has been known to visit elysiun every now and then .

sirwebster: the dark spots you are noticing is a limitation of static particles. I hope one day it is fixed, but until then the only work around I know of is to be tricky with your light setup. Hairs that point directly at a light source will be dark, so place your lights carefully.

Thank you all for your kind words. Its very encouraging.

Thank you for the advice on animating particles ... and thanks for the blend file. It always helps to be able to dig down into the details. I've avoided trying to animate static particles and have limited myself to animating with fluid particle systems. I am currently working on a tornado scene. I would like to be able to animate grass and/or wheat as they are being affected by the twister. There were two reasons why I've avoided even trying that, and one of them was the fact that I didn't know how to animate static particles. The other is ... well ... it takes a long time to render scenes with any large amount of grass, wheat, or anything like that. I suppose it's time to get my hands dirty, jump right in, and delegate my render times to those hours when I am asleep.

Thanks again, and good work on your fur library. If you have any other itches that you would like to relieve by creating another library, think of us.
