Introduction

Dear Blenderheads,

Nehpets and TheWood have been preparing a new contest concept for you
guys. After some deep thoughts and groovy mail exchange, we came to the
conclusion that we could organise regular topic oriented contests where
results would be polled for appreciation and where results and images
would be posted on a special "contest results" thread.

The price for the winners: Glory :0) Well, that is if you like your
images to be ranked and posted as contest winners.

this isin't your average weekend challenge either ! this is a full on competition of sorts for some high quality modeling, texturing and lighting works.

we wanna make artists out of you with the experience that this community can offer. so even if your not as good as some, please join. but only if you are willing to completly finish each entry you have.

We sincerely hope you will join us in these contests and to see your
images soon,

As usual, there will be some rules to follow:

[Nehpets and TheWoods Modeling Thread]

Subject: Abandoned Places

Rules:

1. Each thread will have a theme or "Subject" and you are to stick to
that theme/subject at all times

2. TheWood and myself will start all Main threads, polls and Results
threads.

3. the ways things work. the reasons for this are to help people get
into good practice for modeling lighting and texturing.
------a. submit a rough(or detailed) concept of your scene, if you have one
------b. modeling
------c. lighting
------d. texturing
------e. final renders/post production work
(the above do not have to be in any certain order, but do need to be done at some point in time unless stated otherwise)

4. when all submissions have been made(no time limit folks !) there will
be a poll and the entries will be voted apon.

5. when your finished please provide a thumbnail and/or link to your
image, in this thread, with a title, description, name, and author. the Final works will
be posted in Finished projects with this information.

6. have fun, ask questions, and don't be afraid to show off :]

This sounds like fun.

I will choose 'abandoned toilets' as my theme. (I had a nightmare about weird dogs that i had to turn inside out with my hands to kill and I was chased into some toilets at some point - scary)

I dont have a sketch or anything at the moment, but I will try and get something together to show what I am aiming for.

Sounds great, I've been looking for some longer term contests, in the vein of the weeklong contest "Weekend Challenge" that we did a few years ago.

Question: If there is no time limit, how do you know when it's over? I know that it helps me get things done if I know when the deadine is. Or, at least I know how long I have to procrastinate .

well, the idea is to help you get a project finished with it being totally complete. but the no-deadline is to allow everyone to get every detail they need in the scene. you need to put a deadline on yourself :] its good practice anyways.

First off I love this idea! I need as much practice as I can get. This will give others a chance to see how other artists think and what their procees is. I assume that you are counting on the community (competetors and non-competetors) for feedback? The feedback hopefully will not only center on modelling and lighting but also on total scene composition (where I am lacking the most).

I like your concept of the abandoned subway. I am assuming that you will have a reason for the front car to be derailed like broken tracks, or maybe the track foundation crumbled out from under it.

I'll get my brain churning to see what I can come up with.

ah so many things to say !

first off, yes we are relying on the community on this one :] we hope that everyone who participates in this thread and/or reads it will offer crits to everyones works as they progress.

secondly we hope that comments and crits will be offered for all areas of the scenes.

and thirdly, yes there's a reason for the car being like that and you will just have to see when i get some actuall models up here :]

well, maybe with some work, you can get it to look that way. remember, this isin't speed modeling or anything like that. its all about making quality stuff in blender.

and so with that note, here's what i've gotten done today:

Hey,

I like the idea, and I'm hoping to throw something of my own in here. Sometimes it's nice to be given a direction to work in.

As for your model Neph, it looks like there's a gap between the side panel and the end piece of the car. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be there, but I thought I should point it out.

Ive been playing and trying to get something to work from. I couldnt resist playing with textures either so I added some really quick ones to the main parts.

After I rendered, I used my graphics program to draw in some lines for where my items will be placed and extras such as broken sections. (in an image not shown here)

(These models (urinals and door) are very quick - they will be improved on greatly (I hope - if my modeling skills allow)).

Also, the whole scene should be bigger than this...I have an image in my mind of how I want it to look and I need to add the cubicles and sinks...etc...

edit: I forgot to mention, this is actually one of the ideas I had for the abandoned toilet. - the other was a more isolated toilet...but I may focus on it during this scene. (main focus)

To all so far, thanks for your interest and for joining our contest.

Kirpre: The idea is to have some regular polls on the images already finished. I think we could have a first poll at the end of the month. This way, each month (or other time period yet to be defined as the contest goes and if we already have some images) we will have a winner, and after a longer period of time, we will have a general subject related poll which will conclude the first contest. In other words, it would be like having prequalification for the "final" poll where the best images will be defined. We are not sure yet of the time period since we need to see if we have enough images to really make a fair contest. I guess time will tell us .. Thanks for your interest.

Maaatt: This looks cool so far. Hope to see more very soon.

Code-astro: that's an already advanced concept. Nice so far. Keep it up.
(hope your nightmares are ok )

As co-organisator of this contest, I guess I should post my own concept for my abandoned places scene. I am working on some early drawings I will hopefully post soon. Now I have to find where I put my scanner... lets see... somewhere in a box from my recent move...
Anyway. I'll post them very soon.

I am glad people like the idea.

Cheers!

An awesome idea. It is a great opportunity for all of us to improve.
I found this image on the net and I really liked it. I will be making an abandoned Church Steeple from this reference image. I want it to be similar but I will be making it at sunset or early morning for a different mood

OK, I thought I would do something that I haven't done before: an outdoor scene. Waterwheels have a fair amount of detail so I was leaning in that direction. I have here 2 different settings, one a river-side setting or 2 an abandoned mine scene. Which scene do you think would be more appealing? I am leaning toward the mine scene but it would have more detail than I have attempted before (actually both would have more detail than I have done before ). Thanks!

Hello Radrevere!

Welcome to the contest. I like the waterwheel idea. I think the abandoned mine setting could be really cool. It depends how much effort you want to put in your scene. If it is the first time you are dealing with that kind of details, I should take the one you feel would be the less painful to model.

There is always a balance to have between the amount of details you want to put in a model and the patience you have. In the end you need to choose what you like to model the most with that in mind.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
