Is there a way to permenately delete a material so as to un-clutter the material data block?

In a scene of mine, there are about 5 materials not being used by any objects. This was due partly to careless dulpicating. Is there a way to get rid of these extra materials short of when I make a new object assigning the un-used materials and re-naming them?

Make sure the material has 0 (zero) users. Save the file. Clear everything with CTRL-X, reopen the file CTRL+O - whallah!

Should some unused materials still be around, try quitting blender fully before reopening your file.

just to point out, that does work with materials, but as far as i know there isn't a way to get rid of unwanted textures, so be more careful when adding them.

the zero user will be deleted thingy works with Texture too, but it takes a longer cycle of save/reload until they are really deleted, because it works has follow

- you have a material with a texture attached to it.
- you detach the material from the object it was assign to
the material now has 0 users, but the texture still has 1 user. It is attached to the material
- you save and reload, the material is delete, but not the texture since it still add one user. Now that the material is deleted though, the texture has 0 users and will be deleted on the next save/reload.

I hope that was clear.
