Crazy ipo handles

Though I am new to blender animation techniques, I am not unfamiliar with the concepts of animation; yet this puzzles me.

I am running 2.46, and when editing a curve… the handles themselves shoot off or seem to snap to a point out in the middle of nowhere. Of which I can not rearrange back to its original position.

is this a bug or am I using the action/nla editors backwards?

You must have accidentally hit the Auto Clamp Handles (Alt-H) you can change that by going to the IPO header and (in curve edit mode - Tab) -> Point -> Handle Type -> Auto (or just Shift-H with the point selected) .

I tried the above, but the handles still fly off into the corner.

I experienced the same thing and submitted a bug report about this now (bug number 17495).

Good Deal, I am looking forward to changes if any.
