since my xsi-styla rig lacked some controls i tried to tweak the weakest point - the spine. here’s what came out.

there are three control objects - neck, spCont.1 and spCont.2 (check out the file)

all of them are ik-constraints, spCont.1 and spCont.2 have a influence value < 1. additionally the neck is a copy-rotation constraint for the last two bones, sp5 and sp6. sp6 is fully affected, sp5 only 30%. i came up with those values empirically.

it seems to work quite ok, i didn’t test it with mesh deformation, though. please tell me what you think.

It’s an interesting setup. I will have to attach it to other limbs.
