I’m looking into doing a comic-styled animation - similar to the wikked MTV show “Spiderman” - for the most part, I am blown away by that show’s animation. It’s obviously done with 3D software but has a cel-shaded illustration style.
So far, I’ve determined that I can get away with a low poly count, since I wont need to show eyebrow hairs or wrinkles around the mouth, etc. But I’m still working on figgering out the specifics on it.
Has ANYONE done much work in animating with the Toon shaders, going for a comic/cartoon styled look? Just curious if anyone can give me some pointers.
here are some images from the Spiderman show to give you an idea of my goal:
only one lamp casting shadows on characters (environments are different)
edge settings
for the latter, getting satisfactory results isn’t really possible in blender because the edge color can’t be specified for individual objects, also it is difficult to specify how edges will be generated on sharper edges on a mesh
Thanks for the tips. I’m about to get up on this now.
Do you think these kinds of animations are lo-polys, or do you think they’re just as hi-poly as regular models? Still trying to figure out the whole approach. I get the feeling that, once I’m into this, I can’t really change direction too much - so if I start with low poly models, and then discover that I was wrong, I’ll have to start over.
Well - I imagine, to some degree yes… but, if the detail isn’t there from the start, subsurf wont put the detail in there… I think for now, I’m going to start out the movie in low polys, just to map out the movie, and then if I’ll start building the characters up once the movie is coming along.
