Moving a walk cycle

I’ve animated a walk cycle with the character not actualy moving (walking in place). How can I use that same walk cycle and move the character in a scene. This has been giving me a hard time for a while. Is there a way I can set the armature positions (locs for the most part with several rots) relative to the rest of the armature and not relative to the scene? I’ve tried time and time again to actualy animate the character moving through the scene but I just can’t get it right. Any help is greatly appriciated. Also please excuse my typing, i’m a bit on the sleepy side right now.
