How to render a nebula?

I want to make a nebula like this: http://www.ap3d.com/betterspace/index.htm (Building a Better Nebula (Part 3)).

How do I do this? Here is my lame attempt with particles:

Hey cool! Saving a png does interesting things with transparency!

Just imagine that the background is black.

Edit: Never mind, I Gimped it and added a black bk. :stuck_out_tongue:

A little small maybe, but that looks really pretty. Keep working on it, you’re getting somewhere. Perhaps try and definte the 3-dimensional shape you’d roughly like the nebula to be, before fiddling with the particle settings it’s emitting.

Question. If you want to make a nebula like the one in the tutorial, why are you using particles?

The tutorial shows you how to make the texture in PS, so I don’t see where the problem comes in. Nevertheless, I made an example file for nebulas a while back, it’s good as a study reference. Want it?

Sure m@adcow, I’ll take the file. When I started I thought I would want to use particles because I thought I could make a better looking nebula that way. But now it seams I can’t, so I think I will just go with the texture. Thanks guys.

Its looking good. I think the only time you would need to use particles for a nebula would be if it is going to be animated, like if you have a camera follow a ship as it flys thru it.

Hows this look?

:o

Wow. If I did not know, I would honestly say that this a Hubble image. Great work!

BTW maybe a tutorial?

Wow! My first post on elysiun, not even in artwork, and I get such praise? Thanks!

I made a complete skybox if anyone wants it: http://www.restorides.com/~nerd/spacebox.zip

And the blend: http://www.restorides.com/~nerd/skybox3.blend

Seems like you forgot to pack the textures into the .blend. Go to the File menu, and click “Pack Data”, then save the .blend once again.

Sorry, I packed the data a uploaded it again for any one who wants it.

Wow, looks great. 8) But shouldn’t the stars be either “inside” the nebula or behind them? Right now they look like they’re in front of it.
