Maybe the origin of the track-object is not correct. Is it in the center of the track-object? (if not, correct it with: Select trackobj -> F9 -> Center New)

You are on the right way.

For chain mechanics try to do:

1.Make Curve parent for your chain’s segment
2.Hit at anim banner curve track[on] and curve follow[on]
3.as you notticed, your segment position has changed after it
4.Select segment and go to edit mode
5.Select all verticles and correct the position of chain segment,
that it’ll be placed very close over your curve track
6.Exit edit mode, place cursor marker idealy in the center of connection between two segments (usually an axis)
7.Hit [centre new] at your edit panel and place weight center of segment at cursor marker position
8.Now hit dupli verts on
9.Change number of frames [curve lenght segments] that it’ll match lenght of your duplicated chain elements.
9a. Correct your segment width to match curve lenght

  1. As you’ll nottice it is good solution to animate chains, but you have to separate each segment first;)
  2. Try to enlarge your curve resolution to get more smooth bends between segments at curve
