    thelowlander's sketchbook

Hey guys, here's my sketchbook. It's been ages since I've been really active here. Part of it is that I've been without an image hosting service. Trying out Flickr now. I'm starting wih some older projects and going to some newer ones. I'm open to critique

I'm doing the architecture academy as well, so some images from that. I don't consider any of it finished, just learning:

here's some stuff that's starting to look okay... I guess. Still staring blind on how to improve, so critique is always welcome:

The European building chapter. Kinda happy with how this turned out. No image textures whatsoever, just procedural (bricks and noise)

Having a lot of difficulties doing the skyscraper chapter. I've made a fair amount of buildings, roughly based on reference and buildings I've seen while travelling, but no matter what camera angle I choose or what kind of lighting/etc I choose, I can't get it to look nice enough to move to the next step. Any tips on how to get past this blockade would be greatly appreciated.

Another one. I'm a diver and I love sharks, so I made a cartoon shark as a small side project and had it printed in 3D as a bracelet at a local 3D printer... Unfortunately, during travel, the fin broke at the attachment point. Fortunately it's not a real shark, since shark-finning is the bane of our society.

This really frustrates me. I have no idea how to add a subtle "shark skin" effect. I think I'm starting to get the hang of cycles, then I try a different subject and I can't get it to look as I want at all.

Printed in 3D. By the way, you get this at my shapeways account, which probably prints better than an old Makerbot anyway. :P

Finished the bathroom module. Not completely happy with it... Again, kinda stuck on how to improve. Forgot to add the slippers with the towels... o well.

All the boards are modelled, might have been able to get away with textures instead... Not that happy with the gravel pit either.

Got my masters of Anatomy book a little while ago, decided to try and make a character starting from one of the characters in the book. The original art is from Corey Smith.

I plan for this to be a very sexy version, and maybe to get me back into the whole character rig creation thingy... not sure yet.

Beautiful works! These Architecture renders look nearky perfect, especially the kitchen! I think all they they lack is some more compositing and color grading ( you could try to use Film Preset in the color Management Tab, I use it all the time since it really is a bit of magic, makes your stuff look so much better instantly if you tweak the exposure and gamma a bit )
As for the skyscrapers, IMO they look a bit unnaturally because the material is pretty much plain white, some slightly different values for different parts might help it.
    Love it
Have a look at this very suboptimal Sketchbook.

Thank you! It's rendering right now with the film preset, just to see how much of a difference it will make. Been playing with the materials but nothing enough to show (ended up not saving stuff because it didn't look any better), so that will still be a while. Thank you for the tips!
here's what I did tonight. I'm glad I'm starting to get good enough that a head like this takes me just an evening or two, not so glad that it's soo darn hard to stay motivated for it :P
