Will Blender Shading Knowledge transfer to Maya?

Hey I originally posted this question in the Lighting and Rendering forum but it hasn’t gotten any responses, I figured I would post it here.

I was thinking about learning how to create shaders in Blender and was wondering if the knowledge/experience will transfer over to creating shaders in Maya on a conceptual level? I have never used Maya and haven’t made a in depth shader in Blender before and was just wondering.

Thanks.

Much of the Maya Software engine nomenclature is about the same as Blender Internal. If you understand one you can quickly understand the other.
The difference is mainly UI.

Cycles on the other hand works a bit different, with little comparison to Maya.

Okay How similar is Cycles to Renderman and the Arnold Renderer?

Arnold is VERY similar to Cycles, although somewhat less so with materials (Arnold has an ubershader it uses for most things). Renderman has quite a few different shading modes. The new RIS mode is fairly similar to Arnold/Cycles, but it also uses an ubershader for most things. Renderman also has a plugin for Blender and a free non-commercial version, if you want to take it for a spin now.
