As Ace says, it's promising but if it doesn't scale up...
From the pictures i can say it lacks in reflections and shoadows definition. Even though it looks really impressive for a single sample render!

    The question is:
if we add samples are we getting better definition?
    • If not, it's only good for realtime: for Blender I could only think of Cycles preview window.
    • If yes, i'll jump on this train with you

Hi, can someone please tell me where to get the latest "mac" denoising build? It's no longer on blender.org

How old is the build you are using?
Denoising option is in Render layer tab. It should be in RC1 (but not sure about Mac):
    https://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.79/
Be patient, English is not my language.

Hi, thanks. doesn't appear to be in 2.78 or the 2.79 release candidate for mac. Is there a test branch for mac somewhere?

Hi Paint Guy, denoiser is in master for some month now.
If it is not in RC OSX build there is something really wrong here.
I can ask in #blendercoders tomorrow, it is to late today.

    Cheers, mib

It's very unlikely denoising is missing in the RC. Note that the denoising option is in the render layers tab, as mentioned by YAFU.

Does anyone know if Lukas will be working again on the cross-frame denoising? Or if anything like Vapoursynth will be added to the compositing in Blender? I'm getting great results with the denoiser on still images, but it doesn't translate well in animations.

    Animated Denoise Test

As expected, DOF gives Denoising a hard time.
Also pixels with a brightness value far over 1 often spark "black spots".

That is a problem with many screen space techniques, they more or less rely on a "one object per pixel" world. Transparency, motion blur and depth of field are all tricky for screen space algorithms. There are methods for applying filters in path space, but those don't allow you to adjust the parameters after the render.

The denoiser actually worked rather well on your scene, except for the black pixels. You really have to pay attention to see the issues.
Mine with a dark environment and noisy glossy reflections created many splotches. This is not the denoised version because I didn't keep it, but this scene didn't work at all: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/zRYn4

Anyone has any info, if the functionality to apply denoising to passes will be implemented?
